Several indicators in my opinion, color and body both indicate water snake to me. Also, if you zoom in the eyes are pretty pronounced on the head. Definitely seem to be water snake eyes.

I thought cottonmouth at first, but if you look at it you can see the eyes from above.

Cottonmouth eyes have a little ridge over them, making it hard to see their eye.

The narrow head with "bug" eyes that appear to be visible from above. A cottonmouth will have a more "arrowhead" shaped head (yes, I know the whole "head shape isn't a good indicator for most people argument") with ridges above the eyes that block them from view from above.

But yes, a good picture of the face showing the labial bars on the mouth would increase my certainty.

Thanks guys. I was looking on my PC and couldn't zoom in and see the eyes, and presumably lack of mascara.

Water snake all day long, lots of little tells. Most people think the dark color and thin tail would mean cottonmouth, out by me we see a lot of those.

This lil dude is in my neglected garden. Trying to clean it out, weeding and raking leaves. He relocated himself from one corner to the other as I cleaned out the leaves, then I disturbed him again this morning. Not sure where he is now. I assume he will hang around even if he doesn't have leaves?

This is a harmless, but technically not non-venomous, checkered garter snake. I bet he'll stay around as long as there is a food source.

Working in Bull Creek (Austin) yesterday. Saw a 3'-ish slender snake that we assumed was a watersnake. Then we saw a fatass with something in it's mouth swim across the creek an up on the bank, figured that was a moccasin.
