There are areas of west Texas where some of the deer have abnormally long canine teeth, and are affectionately referred to as vampire deer. Not sure if it also confers a desire for eating meat.

Dumb question…I know rat snakes are good climbers but do all snakes have the ability to climb?? Particularly mocs, rattlers and copperheads? I know growing up running trot lines on Lake Steinhagen (Dam B) we would come across water snakes in the flooded cypress trees in the lake…TIA

Yes. I put a copperhead on a strand of barbed wire fence once and it crawled right down along it until it found a cross wire and crawled down to the ground.

Some snakes are better at it than others. Water snakes are pretty good climbers.

Vipers can climb but avoid it. They hunt and hide on the ground. That's why the 1/4" hardware cloth I ran around the base of my backyard fence has pretty much kept all the copperheads out but I still find the occasional water snake or yellow belly racer or rat snake in my yard. The copperheads simply avoid climbing it when they can turn and travel on the ground in a different direction.

Speaking of rattlers...My dad sent me this timber from Montgomery, TX. I live in south Florida and almost never see snakes. I really expected to see more here, but my family finds way more in TX.
