I don't blame you, you want to protect what you love. I'm personally the same way, which is why I follow this thread each year so I can have some knowledge built up in the event it's necessary. Regardless of venomous or not, if it's close enough to my kids or strikes one, I'd have a hard time letting it slither away.

Copperhead popped one of my parents boxer mixes the other days. A little Benadryl and two days later doggie is same as normal. My mom said she has seen about 10 copperheads this week alone

With what you have around there I wouldn't necessarily say that is a bad thing. My parents house is around 150 yards from our pond and they have seen an uptick in copperheads. Combine that with taking the cows off the property and they are moving around more.
In Collin county we finally got some rain and we had more water snakes moving about. Haven't seen any other kind of snake in a month or two, seen dozens of these around the golf course ponds though.

ETA I guess the rodent is safe. I just looked it up and water snakes don't eat rodents - just fish and amphibians. As aggressive as they are, I thought maybe they'd go after swimming rodents, but according to the interwebs, that's a no.

The three ponds are suffering again, down at least two feet from their most recent highs. I'm still seeing several large catfish and plenty of perch, so the prey still seems adequate for the small population of snakes, which includes a darker one that is larger than the one pictured.

The faint pattern I can see tells me plainbellied water snake.
Dang, large snake. I was under the impression the largest dbws were around 5', but just looked it up and now see that some reported snakes can be closer to 6'.
