No picture, but the family is in Sonoma County, CA for vacation with the in-laws… went to lake Sonoma, doing some bank fishing and my 5 year old says "I just stepped on a snake" I don't really believe him but he says "whoa! Yup a snake!"

I go look and it's a freaking 8" rattlesnake baby, alive and slithering away.

Talk about nervousness after that.

Not snake but a lizard, hope this is allowed. In Houston, sitting by the pool and this dude skitters out. Racing around on the concrete feasting on the ants running around. He was about 1/2" long with another 1" tail. I am pretty sure he is a green anole baby but can someone confirm? I know they are not rare but I always love seeing their chameleon abilities, this little guy was brown and gray, matching the concrete.

Brown anole... they are an invasive species. Green anoles are a separate species that is native. Brown anoles are very common in the Houston area. They are pretty cool for an invasive though.

No problem. I know it says snake thread but 12f is a herper and is an expert in pretty much all reptiles and most amphibians. I do what I can but I'm not an expert. Never be afraid to post one here.

Pretty sure I saw this dude's mom or dad this week. Big 3-5" Lizard of same color on brick assumed it was a GA blending in. Dead wrong and learned something new today

TPWD had a brown anole reporting program. It's really interesting - their concentration. I only have green anoles at my house in Richmond but browns are VERY close by.

They were everywhere around here until the big freeze a couple of years ago caused an extinction event.

Got another live one on Nextdoor. A very clear picture of a cottonmouth, yet there's a guy literally calling everyone else idiots because he thinks it's a rat snake. Usually it's the nonvenomous being identified as venomous, not the other way around.

One of my dogs spent the better part of the day yesterday f'ing with one of them. Just kept carrying it around in her mouth, dropping it, letting it run, catching it again. Wouldn't come inside and leave the poor thing alone.

We did a family trip to Belize earlier in the month and I looked up snakes, which was kind of pointless. We did a lot of hiking to waterfalls and sometimes did not see more than a couple of people all day. Not even on the road. No clue where the nearest hospital or doctor would be. So I started looking at a list of dangerous nope-ropes like that fer-de-lance and thought -- what the F would I do anyway if I get tagged?
