Neat, that's a Slowinski's cornsnake. A good find for that area.

Are pet corn snakes hybrids of Slowinskis? Related to rat snakes, right?

The pattern and colors steered me towards a great plains rat snake rather than the run of the mill western. How do you identify it as a Slowinski's? I think this is only the second time I've seen/heard of one of these.

They're related and the taxonomy of that group gets shuffled around.

By range it is a slowinski's, as opposed to a great plains. The head pattern is different on young ratsnakes.

I have been chased by them when I was swimming lakes. Not as scary as being followed by a moccasin but not pleasant

Another "poisonous" snake. That would be frightening though.

Damn. That's just a lose-lose situation. Get bit by a copperhead or crash your chopper. Although, I'd be curious to know what the snake really was. Probably just a rat snake or something knowing most people's snake ID capabilities.

Copperhead bite all day. They aren't deadly.

Very much this. It's not a question really. Had an lady who broke her wrist freaking out about a gecko in her house today. She jumped and fell backwards onto her hand up underneath her body. Then she further injured her wrist with a broom trying to push the lizard out the door. This copperhead story is a similar decision making situation.

Keep calm and think in animal encounters.

Yup, my fiance now has a titanium elbow since she stepped into the shower right onto a scorpion, reacted too quickly, and shattered her elbow. Never broken a bone in her life except for that.

Snakes are not like some other creatures, like wasp, since they don't attack you for no reason. At least the ones in the USA.

I can't imagine running into a giant reticulated python like that in the wild, much less in my house or business. From the few people I have ever talked to that owned them, they're apparently giant A-holes too.

Haven't seen anything myself yet, but the snake ID groups have been blowing up the last few days. The vast majority seem to be broad banded watersnakes around the Houston area.

Yep, and hognoses.

Couple winter finds for me:

Several diamondbacks and a coachwhip sharing a board on a sunny winter day outside of Austin

Baby western mudsnake from north Houston

Cottonmouth

Taylor's ground snake from south Texas

I missed the literature coming out but apparently that genus got split into 3 species, with south Texas getting its own species.

Correct calls on cottonmouth, and I'll add that it is really dirty and needs its first spring shed.
