Saw 5 snakes today in Hamilton and mills counties on dirt roads. They were really moving! Only got close enough to 2 to identify - a copperhead and a rattlesnake

Had the pleasure of hunting on the King Ranch this weekend and had this pretty thing greet us in the morning on the front porch trying to mimic the running W. About 2.5' long. Species?

Thx. That's what our guide called it (just garter). It might have been closer to 2' but no shorter.

The drought and heat kept them away all summer, but cooler temps and a bit of rain, and I find one. Looks a bit undersized.

That makes sense, very cool. Interestingly enough the subspecies up there is the "red-sided" garter snake and the "eastern" garter snakes in southeast Texas have very similar coloration, with the bright red and black checkered pattern, despite not have a geographical connection.

I know... I told him most people would probably call that one a desert king.

He had actually correctly identified it already. He's a pretty bright guy who loves the natural world too. Interventional cardiologist in Amarillo.
