The AR itself was $800...

Yep. Picked up the R5 rail from a guy on ARF for $117. I have a magazine pouch/sling coming in to finish it up. Total will be ~$1000.

I'm thinking the can came loose from the barrel shoulder enough to cause a baffle strike. I was shooting tannerite over a tank and saw a stream of ripples in the water as the baffles and end cap went flying.

Thankfully I only had ~$100 into that suppressor and no tax stamp since I manufactured it under my FFL. I would have really been pissed if it were a commercial suppressor with the $200 wasted.

The gun/suppressor in better days

Still messing around with foregrip location and sling options on the new gun.

Like the Vickers sling....not as sold on the mag pouch, but it was pretty common on A4s in the early 2000s so I wanted one just to have. Might take it back off and just go with the sling.

I never liked the mag pouch myself, and never really liked the gangster grip, especially on a long rifle.

Just got my new AR in from EyeGuy last week. It's chambered in 6.8 SPC. He built it for me, basically the Texian billet lower, AR Precision upper with 18" barrel, keymod handguard, Magpul furniture. Currently running the Vortex Viper 4-12x on it. Hoping to get to the range Thursday.

If any of y'all are looking into an AR, y'all should definitely check out his builds.

Clarification, AR15 performance barrel... that's my upper, haha.

I'm considering an AR for hog hunting. Would a Vortex Diamondback 1.75x5 paired with a tactical red flashlight/predator light be a decent night set up? Will the red light (or green) throw enough light that I can pick out the reticle, or do I need to consider an illuminated reticle scope? Would plan on shots being 200 yards or less, most likely right around 100 yards.

Anyone have any .308 upper assembly recommendations? I have an assembled lower and a can on the way. Looking for a .308 barreled upper.

DPMS pattern uppers should work.. something from PSA, AERO, etc. FYI, however, getting an AR10 to run isn't as easy an an AR15. We build our uppers on Aero Precision uppers, but there really isn't much in the way of a warranty if it doesn't run right out of the box. Part of why people tend to buy full builds from me vs just uppers. I can problem shoot the entire gun, but that's two hours of gunsmithing plus parts so usually around $140 or so.

I apparently glossed over it. The diamondback is a good scope. I'd look to see if you can find a Strike Eagle somewhere. Much nicer scope though it is 2x the price. If you want to stay at that price range, the DB is a great little scope though.

I'll take a look at the Strike Eagle as well. I guess I'm more concerned with my setup, trying to use a predator light with a regular scope and still having enough ambient light thrown by the light to see the reticle.

Brownells has stripped lowers right now for $39.99

Anderson Manufacturing stripped AR15 lowers

Just FYI. My wife would feed my body to the hogs if I bought another one myself but later this year, I'll be looking around for at least one upper (I have 2 lower built and only one upper) plus budget optics for no more than 4x

Anyone local in College Station with an FFL that we can ship stripped lowers to? I know eyeguy isn't too far...

And thanks Eyeguy, I'll probably go with the Vortex Strike Eagle now that I've looked at it a bit more.

Current project: M110 re-barreled to 6.5 CM

Instead of paying $20k for the limited 1 of 100 M110 kits from Knight's (KAC), I've gone the route of utilizing the SR25 ECR as a donor rifle (and saved about $12k). Basically, I''m just swapping the non-M110 parts for correct ones as seen on the issued rifle.

I elected to go with the 6.5 CM due to its ballistic superiority over the .308, commercial ammo availability (was considering .260 remington), and compatibility with the SR25 platform. Also, I already have an SR25 ECC in .308 and wanted something different. I thought this would be a pretty unique project and just flat-out cool. I used a Bartlein 26" 5R barrel blank and am having it cut and contoured to the 20" M110 profile by Marvin Pitts at Nefarious Arms, LLC. in Arkansas.

I purchased the SR25 ECR from boltcarrier.com, who is also performing the barrel swap, FDE cerakoting, and misc. parts swap.

Below are a few pictures of the parts and pieces for this build.

That plus this $419 rifle kit from PSA and all you would need is a rear sight and magazine. $500 and you've got yourself a good functioning rifle.

Kit link: http://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-16-midlength-5-56-nato-1-7-socom-melonite-moe-rifle-kit-7780444.html?mobile=2

I'll say this at least one more time: I don't see $500 AR-15s still being a thing in October. Buy now if you want one. Hell, at these prices buy two.

It's been more a week, so I'm bumping this thread.

I did say "and other semi auto shilling" in the title, and I've talked mostly about ARs, so I'd like to talk about another semi auto I enjoy a lot: The roller delayed blowback system made famous by the G3 and more importantly by it's 9mm derivative, the MP5.

The real rough origins of the design is that after WW2 when NATO was adopting 7.62x51 rifles, the US went with the M-14 and most of the rest of the world adopted the Belgian FAL. The West Germans also adopted the FAL, but when they asked for a license to produce FALs domestically in Germany, Belgium flipped out (can't imagine why they wouldn't want to help Germans arm themselves after WW1 and WW2, can you?) and said no. So Germany turned to CETME, a Spanish firm, and a design developed by German engineers working at CETME.

They eventually developed variants in 5.56 and 9mm as well, with the 9mm version arguably being the most successful and popular variant of the system.

There are various companies and builders producing some of these various versions for sale to US gun owners, and if you're looking for something different from an AR-15, I highly recommend checking them out.

PTR makes versions in 7.x62x51 and 7.62x39. Mine from them is a .308. Though I bought mine too early, new models do come equipped from PTR with a paddle mag release, and unless you opt for a GI version often a welded on top rail, making magazine changes and mounting optics easy. There is no bolt hold open, and it is most obviously older tech....but they're robust, reliable and damned fun guns.

There are also a lot of companies making the 9mm version in several different varieties. I opted for a cheaper clone, and while the finish on the gun is not great it has been supremely reliable and a joy to shoot. Mine is currently equipped with a sig brace and a folding mechanism, but will be SBR'd shortly. I chose the "reverse stretch" option, which combines the shortened front of the "K" model of the MP5 with the stardard rear, so it can accept any buttstock designed for the MP5, unlike true K models which can only accept K buttstocks.

Here is a picture of both next to a CZ-75 compact, to give you an idea of the size. The reverse stretch MP5 is a true joy, and I'll put up some more pictures of it in a second.
