Where are all the super important "experts" who claimed Elon was going to jail over some silly techinicality? Lots of folks should eat crow over this.

Lots of posters were super cereal about the violations. Laugh at you.
I didn't (and still am not sure) think Musk would get it because most Dems/true believers will generally sacrifice all for the God of politics, which is socialism/communism. Political acolytes generally are the ones who take the arrow "for the team", while never being mentioned or appreciated by anyone. See several hundred million people in the last 120 years alone.

I'd like to be less cynical, but judges, politicians, and supposed erudite producers and journos have done their job. I just read and keep up.

I think Trump is in weird position. If he wants to save Truth Social then he might have to stay off Twitter and make people go to TS to hear his content. He has a lot of leverage here with his followers IMO.

Go for it. Massive anti-trust lawsuit with an incoming GOP congress.

What you post to one, you post to the other, and vice versa.

Many podcasters and internet personalities already cross post between Twitter, Gettr, Gab, Parler, etc etc.

Not that hard.

I imagine Nunes is none too pleased with Musk's purchase. Right now he's in the denial phase.

There are a lot of people like me that will not go to Truth Social if Trump comes back on Twitter. If he doesn't then I'll continue to wait on the waiting list for Truth Social so that I can again see what he's talking about.

also, I think you are greatly overestimating the people that refuse to go to twitter because Trump is not there. I left twitter when they banned him, but as this board has shown, people can't stay off twitter.

Washington Post columnist Megan McArdle pointed out, even for someone with Musk's nearly unfathomable wealth, $43 billion was not some tiny sum, and such a move made little financial sense for him, particularly given that much of his wealth is not liquid. Taking his claims he wanted to reform Twitter's moderation and censorship policies seriously, she argued Sunday he might struggle to implement his changes.

"Twitter's formal moderation policies are only one of the factors that determine what gets banned; at least as important is Twitter's corporate culture, and the sensibilities of the employees who would make moderation decisions while Musk is off running Tesla," she wrote. "Whatever rules Musk sets, they are the ones who will police the gray zones and there will always be gray zones, because no one, not even Elon Musk, wants a truly unmoderated space where child porn and spam tweets jostle with libel and copyright infringement for our attention, crowding out the interesting discussions we'd like to have."
Except we aren't talking about allowing child porn and spam tweets - things Musk has already announced he would do better than Twitter does currently to police - and we aren't allowed to have actual interesting discussions today because Twitter censors or shadow bans anyone that tries to.

Former U.S. Labor Secretary Robert Reich scoffed Sunday at Musk's notion of free speech absolutism, saying it was merely a way to evade accountability.

"When billionaires like Musk justify their motives by using 'freedom,' beware," he wrote in The Guardian. "What they actually seek is freedom from accountability. They want to use their vast fortunes to do whatever they please unconstrained by laws or regulations, shareholders, or even consumers."
Robert, what's your take on George Soros who does the same exact thing on a much grander and actual insidious scale than Elon has ever even thought about?

He has almost no leverage.

Twitter is THE space. TS might get a small number of Trump fanatics, but they're not enough to make much of a difference to Twitter.

I dunno where I would put him on my 'conservative…liberal…leftist' scale, but he has never been motivated in his dealings with money, to any substantive analyses I have read.

Egotist, jerk, somewhere (pretty far along) on the autistic spectrum (like a lot of high-level engineers), to be sure, but there's a reason he doesn't even own a house. Money is a bit incidental to him, I believe, as hard as it is to comprehend.

There is nothing wrong with your statement. I have a great tax preparer...so much so that when we moved from DFW to Tennessee we kept using her. Today's technology has made it very easy to use a qualified tax preparer that you only contact via email and a secure website to download and exchange documents.

She has NEVER shared investment advice to me, nor have I requested it.

I have no idea but I know when they silenced him that there were a ton of people (including me) that got off Twitter. I just recently got back on to see all of the fuss with Elon. I'm simply saying that due to the amount of traffic and fuss that Trump got on Twitter (every damn reporter was waiting for his next tweet so they could write over analyze and spin it into their next article), Elon is obviously going to want that engagement. If Trump decides against twitter then there will still be a lot of traffic (obviously not as much as Twitter) on Truth Social because people want to hear what he's saying. And if Elon eliminates the bots and jacked up algorithms, then who knows what new Twitter looks like.

SAN FRANCISCO, April 25, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Twitter, Inc. (NYSE: TWTR) today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by an entity wholly owned by Elon Musk, for $54.20 per share in cash in a transaction valued at approximately $44 billion. Upon completion of the transaction, Twitter will become a privately held company.

Under the terms of the agreement, Twitter stockholders will receive $54.20 in cash for each share of Twitter common stock that they own upon closing of the proposed transaction. The purchase price represents a 38% premium to Twitter's closing stock price on April 1, 2022, which was the last trading day before Mr. Musk disclosed his approximately 9% stake in Twitter.

Bret Taylor, Twitter's Independent Board Chair, said, "The Twitter Board conducted a thoughtful and comprehensive process to assess Elon's proposal with a deliberate focus on value, certainty, and financing. The proposed transaction will deliver a substantial cash premium, and we believe it is the best path forward for Twitter's stockholders."

Parag Agrawal, Twitter's CEO, said, "Twitter has a purpose and relevance that impacts the entire world. Deeply proud of our teams and inspired by the work that has never been more important."
"Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated," said Mr. Musk. "I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans. Twitter has tremendous potential I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it."

Transaction Terms and Financing

The transaction, which has been unanimously approved by the Twitter Board of Directors, is expected to close in 2022, subject to the approval of Twitter stockholders, the receipt of applicable regulatory approvals and the satisfaction of other customary closing conditions.
Mr. Musk has secured $25.5 billion of fully committed debt and margin loan financing and is providing an approximately $21.0 billion equity commitment. There are no financing conditions to the closing of the transaction.

For further information regarding all terms and conditions contained in the definitive transaction agreement, please see Twitter's Current Report on Form 8-K, which will be filed in connection with the transaction.

In a sense, this comment seems to make Musk's point in buying Twitter.

I got off for two reasons, and it was 50-50 between it taking too much of my time (assuming opportunity cost of that time was better) and because I needed to do what I was thinking. Twitter was/is a gawd-awful censoring hell hole with addictive news.

However, is it still true that 80% of the tweets are made by 20% of the people? If so, I'm glad I'm still gone.

The best investment advice is to pay as little taxes as you can on your investments. That should be your line,

Putting money into an IRA has an immediate return equal to your marginal tax rate. There is no where else to get a guaranteed ~25% or more return in the first year.

And he might be able to deliver 10% of those to TS. And that's probably an upper bound. An even smaller number would become active users.

Moving an entrenched user base to a different platform is not as simple as "Hey, I'm over here!" and users just go.
