Ran into this guy yesterday while tracking mule deer in Utah. Tried to pick him up but he made this crazy hissing sound at me. Decided to abort that mission and just take some pics of him on the ground. Really cool looking snake. I'm thinking Great Basin gopher snake. Thoughts?

A few nights ago my snake finding collie gave her snake bark in the yard and she had found this grumpy critter.
Is it just me or does that water snake have a wonky eye? Almost made me laugh
