How a $20 propane tank exchange almost turned into a $20k hospital bill. You never figure that a small rattlesnake would crawl into a propane tank rack at Walmart in Breckenridge, Texas. First rattlesnake that I have killed in a long time.

Yikes! I think you're missing a 0 behind that estimated hospital bill too, or so I have heard…

The Walmart employee told me that he saw a small rattlesnake crawl behind the propane tanks on the bottom shelf. I was expecting to see a rat snake when we started removing the tanks very carefully.

If you or someone you know gets bit, ask for this doctor to consult. Name linked below and go to HCA Kingwood.

That is who my friend went to after she got bit by a copperhead in Huffman, got everything taken care of and no long term damage. Also how I know the person referencing a $20k medical bill was waaaaayyyyyyy off

Saw two ribbon snakes at our place last weekend. Well, I saw one, and the wife saw another. I asked her to describe what she saw and she said. "It was black and yellow. Black and yellow, kill a fellow, right?" I've got some work to do with her.

Judging how close to the border that picture was taken there is a chance he is shorter than average

Does the use of the space bar imply it is two different subspecies?

Or does the broadband water snake have internet on the go?

I think it's actually hyphenated but am not really sure. BBWS is probably easier for the grammatically challenged, myself included.

My dog got bit by what we suspect was water moccasin. Bleeding in foot and really swollen, heavy breathing. Took dog to emergency vet clinic

They want $3000 to keep her overnight + anti-venom and all the other things

Is that right or am I getting taken to the cleaners?

I'm no expert but I think, according to most experiences posted in here, that that's probably overkill. But that's said with us not knowing how big the dog is, why the vet is recommending all of that, etc.

Benadryl and let them lay still for a few days seems to be the default.

How big of a dog? I'm not one to judge someone for spending a bunch on their dog but if it were me and you're not in Rattlesnake country, I'd probably just give them Benadryl and then take to vet for monitoring.

This is my hypothetical recommendation and I have large labs… hope your pup is okay!

Thanks for your reply. 3 1/2ish lab, female spayed lab approx 65-70lbs

Biggest expense is anti-venom being at 937. I have been blessed after all these years to have never had to deal with this

Location is Needville, TX

Thanks for any help

Agree here. We had a 40-45 English setter in Tennessee get bit in the face a couple times, probably water moccasins. He apparently learned after the second time, where not to put his nose. This was years ago before Benadryl was OTC and we live in the country so he had to just tough it out. He live to be 13.

Again. Benadryl is very ineffective to crotalinae venom.

Do what makes you feel good but it's like taking antibiotics for a virus, when they're meant to target bacteria.

Listen here Bubbles…I have about as much vet experience as McNutty has. I stated clearly that the default comments on this board for about 20 years , by (probably) 100's of posters have been Benadryl and rest. Many/most of those sharing those comments were echoing what their vet had told them. Past that, I have zero additional insight to share because I'm far closer to being an animal medical idiot than animal medical expert.

Now go run a copper scam on some unassuming contractor.

Will do. Trying to get my whitey sales off the ground and pimp these over sized tees.

I think the mechanism of action is more rest than medicinal. But yes I know a few vets and related to one, and 2/3 recommend. The one I'm related to says what I echoed above.
