Bought a house on a small bit of acreage to get away from the burbs just for things like this. We caught this our first full day at the house. I suspect it will be the first of many!

Maybe so. Sure seemed offensive to me. But offense is the best defense as well. Someone oughta tell Jimbo.
Both snakes are speckled kingsnakes and my guess is one tried to eat the other and it became defensive. They are notorious snake eaters, even their own kind.
Yellow belied racer my dog found yesterday. She's good at finding snakes and then has a particular bark once she does.
It's hard to run them down on crutches. And they're bitey little buggers, hence the gloves.
Also stirred up a 4' rat snake while mowing the front yard. It went up on the front porch so I warmed the wife to avoid it, but a bit later I saw it go along the front of the house and into the garage behind a bunch of shelves before I could get to it. Brings of the age old moral dilemma: warn the wife and risk being tasked to find and remove it, or say nothing and risk it later being found in front of the washing machine or the deep freeze or something, secret amusement ensuing, and then still having to deal with it? Probably, if you say nothing, it finds its own way out overnight, so so went with that.

I'm guessing torn ACL chasing snakes.
Torn ACL and meniscus and fractured tibia at Purgatory almost to the bottom of Blackburn's Bash. My first black diamond on the first afternoon of the trip.
I put on a brace, took some ibuprofen and a couple of IPA and skied 3 more days on it.
