Don't think it's rattlesnake. Looks like one of those "faking the triangular head" things that the non venomous snakes do. Just my uninformed opinion.

Gopher Snake but they're basically a bull snake.

It's a gopher snake, as ttha_aggie_09 said. Slightly different species than a bull snake (or one may be a sub species of the other, I really don't know). The only reason I'm calling it a gopher vs a bull is because it's in Colorado.

The bullsnake is a subspecies of gopher snake.

So many dead good snakes. This thread needs to get some attention!

Sincerely,

A guy that used to kill any snake he ever saw. Thanks Texags!

This thread has helped a lot of people over the years! No one is perfect but it sure seems like true IDs aren't needed as much anymore and that people know their stuff.

Props to all the people on here that educate, contribute, and want to learn!

For the record, I did not kill the snake. Was sent to me by neighbor and I knew I could get a quick answer here.

Yep. I started reading this thread last year and got pretty good at identifying Texas snakes. Before that, I would pretty much call any dark snake near water a cotton mouth, most of which I'm sure were water snakes. The next step was joining the Texas Snake ID Facebook group. I'm pretty confident now.

I don't know how to get it on here but one of my wife's sorority sisters lives out in Weston Lakes in Fulshear and they get a ton of snakes so her husband bought a set of snake tong to relocate snakes. Anyway, he's gone one day and she posts a video herself to Facebook using them to pick up and relocate a pair of copulating copperheads- she did not know the ID of the snakes but they were on their pool deck.

Nobody was tagged and she used the tongs and walked the snakes down to the edge of an oxbow near their house and released them.

Both of my neighbors have seen a six foot rat snake, or so I've ID'd. There aren't that many six foot snakes around, racers, etc., but even though I haven't seen him, I've nearly adopted him by telling the neighbors to let him be. I've got a huge creek in the back yard, so I'm certain this snake won't be far away. Everything else is back there.

Besides, I'm hoping he'll kill the two moles roaming the yard at night.

Point being, I too have taken a new approach to snakes in the last three years. I'm great on nearly every species except for water snake vs. Moccs. As long as I see the head--mascara vs. the lines under the mouth---I can tell the difference. Otherwise, I still have difficulty.

I think I'm down to patchnose vs. garter vs. ribbon and great plains rat snake vs prairie king snake. I incorrectly ID'd a Texas Garter as a ribbon snake on Facebook last night. I'm pretty solid with the rest, barring the really rare ones like the lyre snake and such.

Quick summary of the things that popped out to me.

Garter snakes have the water snake thing with lines on their jaw scales, ribbons do not.

Ribbon snakes have a white patch in front of their eye, garter snakes do not.

I would have called this a rat snake but my dad called it a chicken snake. Are they the same thing???

He was caught in the chicken coop with a young duck in his mouth that we were raising so he didn't make it out alive.

Lots of snakes today: 3' PBWS in the yard this morning. 12" ribbon snake (red stripe variant) in shed, and 5' rat snake crinkling across the driveway this afternoon.

I'd lean more towards PBWS on that one.
