Wow, coloring and pattern give it away but that's really close to the moccasin "mascara". Cool example that you have to use multiple point to identify it.
How it's body is positioned in the water is a giveaway. Watersnakes swim with their bodies mostly in the body and mocasins swim on top of the water. Not always true but once you see enough of both you can tell pretty quickly
And your example of the young cottonmouth has such a light eyeline that it's hardly visible.

It was next to the pool and the wife and dog were freaking out. Needed to be dispatched. Tried to move it without messing with its meal.
Eastern rat snake (SW Florida)
Scared up a friendly little eastern ribbon snake while mowing.
Not a snake, but close enough. Hiking outside of palm springs today and saw this guy. Pretty sure it is a zebra tailed lizard.
Went on a walk with the kids and being cooler did not think we would find any snakes. Ended up finding 4 diamondback watersnakes handing out together in a pond. Not a great picutres but they could tell they were being watched so they tried to stay hidden.

Hopefully these pics show up because I'm pulling them from FB from a friend of a friend who is clearly doesn't know what she thinks she does about snakes.
She sent the pics to him and he asked for help on the ID.
Most people tell the lady who took the pics it's a water snake of some species with the vertical bars on the mouth being the giveaway. Not to mention the round pupils and lack of pits or mascara and so forth.
She then goes on a thing about how water snakes are viviparous and posts these pics:
And this little rant too:
"Still, all four fish in the wire basket that this snake was caught in, in the water, appeared to have died of envenomization.
All those fish were healthy and happy a few hours before and when the snake was caught in with them, they were "mushy" not merely dead.
It also was doing violent strikes at the stick I put near it in the video that you saw.
In my experience, most non venomous snakes bite and hold, not repeatedly strike and recoil."
My best guess was a broad banded water snake although I'm prepared to be corrected on that. I just know, without a single doubt, that it is a non-venomous snake.

You are right. It is a water snake. I think it's a blotched water snake. Where were the pics taken.

That's a northern watersnake (pick your subspecies based on location). Nerodia are viviparous and those are developing embryo, not eggs. She's wrong on everything.
