I usually give snakes a pass but not this one. He was right outside the kitchen door. So close a gave him a quick chop with a chopping knife. He was the angriest copper head I've ever seen. Struck at me 6 or 7 times.

ETA: First copperhead I've seen in my yard. Lived here 32 years.

In my mind, if there's one copperhead then there is likely another near by so I keep a shovel at my main door during this time of year.

Yup, I think I would have thrown said knife at him instead of trying to slice at it.

And yeah, I would be pissed too if you sliced me with a knife.

I taught my nieces and nephews the ole if there is one copperhead keep your eyes out for more. We saw one and a minute later spotted the other two.

It's either a plain belly water snake or a diamondback water snake (both harmless). I am struggling a bit between the two on this one (leaning strongly towards DBWS) and will defer to someone like 12f Mane, Badace, or ttha...

No effing clue what it was. They vet guessed small rattle snake based on the drainage and rate of swelling. He's been vaccinated against rattle snake, but she suggested antivenin so we'll see what that bill runs. We live on 8 acres so who knows where he got tagged, but this is why venomous snakes get no quarter here. I'll never kill a non venomous snake, but I don't want this to be one of my kids. For the record we've seen exactly one venomous snake in the 2 years we've lived here and it was a coral snake so it was encouraged to move on. It's the pit vipers will get taken out whenever found
