I don't think so...it was definitely a sharp change from black to brown.

Ring necked snakes can have very dark heads in some areas which might appear black.

A couple of casualties on the road just south of Addicks dam in Houston. Both a little more than a foot long. Sorry about the bad angle of the head on the 2nd. Didn't look close until I got home but almost looks like a mascara line through the eye.

Started a thread already but posting here as well. Long story short, one and three year old kids were playing on the porch and this guy was curled up about a foot from them, made a snap judgment and disposed of him. I know you can't see the head thanks to my efforts the and butt of the BB gun, but what are thoughts on venomous or not?

Look at the head shape
Look at the banding/pattern and the blotted (not sure that's the right description) edges
Look at the hint of a yellow/green tail
Not to mention the color and belly pattern/color…
This is absolutely a Cottonmouth, and a younger one at that. Not sure on size but the faint color on tip of tail is a dead giveaway of it being a juvenile.

I agree belly pattern says cotton mouth to me when comparing images.
Pretty sure it's not thick enough for it's length ti be a CM. Tail isn't completely visible but appears to be too long and pointed, and the head (smashed for sure) doesn't seem to be large enough. I'm calling is a non venomous water moccasin.

It's not thick enough because it's a juvenile. The tail is skinny and greenish/yellow because it is a juvenile. Cottonmouth all the way

Most of us on this page typically don't kill snakes, myself included, but I would have killed this one in your situation 100 times out of 100.
Thanks for the validation guys. Like I said, it was a snap judgement and I am far from a snake expert (hence coming here for the ID help) but didn't want to leave it to chance given the stakes
