Probably a combination of folks being out and about in the brush more now that it is cooling off and the snakes being out more in daylight with cooler nights and rodents gathering food for winter.

Thanks to this thread, I put on shoes and check our porch before walking out to get the mail every night. I just picture a juvenile copperhead on my mat when I grab the doorknob.

I've been keeping my eyes peeled when retrieving an errant football or soccer ball in the vacant lot next door, when I didn't before, in Bellaire.

I know it is 99% certain I won't see a copperhead, but the picture of the poster's wife's hand raised the alert. But I do hope to find some other species for the kids. All we get are frogs and lizards.

Husband sent this guy to the snake afterlife last night after a confirmed ID by me thanks to years of the snake thread. Based on size I think it probably has siblings close by.

It's big enough I wouldn't worry too much about siblings, but when there is one snake, more are usually close by.

Most of these subspecies designations are phenotypic and range based. Genetically there's basically no difference between the subspecies. Mottled rock rattlesnakes are mottled and more commonly seen in Texas than banded rock rattlesnakes. The banded rock rattlesnakes live further west into Arizona and New Mexico mostly and have much cleaner bands without as much mottling between them.
