Agree with 12f... Doesn't look like a speckled king at all to me. Not that that matters once 12f has weighed in.

Thanks! I am going with desert king. Not a huge difference, but at least now I don't feel stupid for doubting the label!

Ok, we usually don't have pets on here, but since it's a slow period and I have a question, I am going to jump in with this. This is our new family pet. I know what he was sold to us as (not saying so I don't bias your opinions), but I feel like it is something slightly different. Can anyone on here 100% ID this guy? He's about a year old, around 2.5 ft.

Black mamba. Be careful.

PS: and obviously just kidding. go with whatever 12f says...

More specifically eastern hognose. Surprised you saw one as cool as it has been lately.

Real, but it's only 3 feet long and being held close to the camera.

Every time I check this random piece of tin in the woods where I hunt, there's a copperhead under it. From yesterday:

It's real. It's a reticulated python. They're the longest snake in the world. Anacondas are nearly as long and much, much heavier so they are usually considered the largest species of snake. The one in that video is very large but not record size.

Have we discussed the "furry" green snake found in Thailand? Assuming this is just a snake with some form of black beard algae growing on it?

Yahoo article with video

Probably a member of the genus Acrochordus. They are commonly known as elephant trunk snakes, file snakes, or wart snakes. There are several southeast Asian species and many are know to grow algae on their skin similar to the snake in the video. However, that snake has the most extensive coverage I've ever seen.

Are they mainly water snakes as I would assume any time on land would strip the algae off?

Yes, they are nearly entirely aquatic. So much so that if they are out on land for too long they can sustain severe damage to their organs.

Very nice... I imagine we will see the snakes retreat again next week with the lat season cold front and but they have been out and about the past few days.

Really cool picture!

Anyone know what type of Heron that is? Well, I'm assuming it's a heron but not sure. I only know a few Herons (Blue, Crowned Night, Green, or Egret - which I think is a heron?) and this doesn't look like one. Outside of ducks and upland birds, my bird ID is lacking…
