I have no doubt that Cruise would give a third movie his all, and demand of it nothing less than yet another incredible spectacle. That said, I'm almost positive I wouldn't want this. There's just something so perfect about how the original and the sequel go together - Cruise losing Goose but then saving his son - and I just don't want to risk damaging the legacy of the franchise, or at least the sequel, in any way.

Just to be clear, for those who only read the headline, there are NO plans for a third movie. Teller is only saying that he and Cruise have casually talked about doing another one, which means that Cruise is at least open to the idea, something I didn't think he'd be...

Real scenes with minimal cgi feels so refreshing these days. It's one of the reasons Mad Max Fury Road is so good.

Maverick reduced its number of theaters by 330 over the weekend. To give that some context, it opened in 4,735 back in May and is down to 3,513 now. Despite that, it is now into its 46th day since opening, and has made less than $3 million per day just once, and that was $2.9 m this past Thursday. Considering how much summer is left, and that there doesn't seem to be another giant franchise movie coming out until Black Adam in late October, it seems entirely likely this thing is going to make a push for $700 million and the top 5 of all time.

Finally saw this. Had been waiting for my youngest son to relent and watch the first one which he had been stubbornly maintaining "didn't look good at all to him." He now considers Top Gun one of his favorite movies, and we both loved Maverick.

Just a great bit of old-fashioned moving making. I almost never see a movie twice in a theater, have maybe only done it once, but my wife and I have talked about maybe watching it again before it leaves. We probably would, too, if we didn't have Love and Thunder next on the list.

It would be awesome if the Maverick success sparked a renaissance of movies that didn't depend on CGI, don't shove a political agenda down your throat, and where the US isn't the bad guy.

Totally understandable and I just saw it in the theater last night instead of seeing TG:M again.

But I wish I'd have just gone and seen Top Gun again and waited for D+ or whatever to see Thor. It wasn't bad by any means, don't get me wrong. But it's a completely different level of experience. I now am planning how to get myself and my wife out to see TG:M again before it's gone.

Take out Iron Man 2 and I'd bet Top Gun Maverick out earned all of those movies combined.

Plus, in defense of Cruise, his turn as Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder showed pretty good range.

Agreed. The way both films tie together is perfect. The character arc for Mav ends perfectly. I just don't know how they could top that with a third.

There was always a need or an opening for a sequel. Goose had a kid. Mav said he may want to go teach, he and Iceman had finally worked together as a team as the 2 best fighter pilots in the world, etc. Lots of angles they could have gone for a sequel that made sense.

Given how long it took to finally make the sequel, and given how well done this script was, I just don't need to see Rooster and Hangman + an even older Mav. I don't see any real workable story that ties back to the original or 2nd in a way that holds any real strength. There's no way a 3rd could ever deliver like the first 2 and it would be purely a money grab.

So with that said...expect it in theaters in 2027.

Maverick buzzed the $600 million tower on Tuesday, just the 12th movie to get there domestically.

Will pass the Incredibles 2 for 11th in the next few days.

Meanwhile, on the other end of the right film, right time spectrum, Lightyear is down to 9th for the year at $113 million. Elvis ($95 million) will pass it for good in the next 2 weeks, meaning it won't finish in the Top 10 for the year.

COVID can't be blamed anymore for bad Box Office numbers. It seems doubtful Lightyear will make it $200 million domestic. The last time a Disney/Pixar movie failed to do that other than during the pandemic was Cars 3 in 2017 and the Good DInosaur 2015.

Everything else since 2010 is gravy - Coco $210 m; Brave $237m; Monsters Uni $268m; Up $293m; Finding Nemo $339m; Inside Out $356m; Toy Story 3 $415m; Toy Story 4 $434m; Finding Dory $486m; Incredibles 2 $608m.

I don't think anyone watched Toy Story and had any concerns that they didn't understand Buzz's character. And he's a toy so it's not like the backstory mattered... Heck we saw basically his entire life because he was a new toy.

I wondered how Woody came into the family. I wondered what toys Andy's mom played with alongside Woody. I wanted to see more toy adventures (until they went back to the well and made Toy Story 2,3,4...).

Add in that you replace Tim Allen so it's not even the same character as the Buzz Lightyear toy. I get why they did it, but it made the movie less interesting to me.

I think the skeletons and day of the dead creeped out a lot of kids in the preview for Coco, but it's one of my kids' favorites from the last 10 years.

Seeing it for first time this friday.

I was 14 when original came out and it was in local theater for I believe an unprecedented 9 months and I think I made it a point to not see it in theater at the time, trying to be too cool for the mass appeal? I don't know but I don't recall seeing it in theater. Didn't have a drivers license or girlfriend at the time and think my friends and I were into comedy and extreme action movies
