I know this board hates regulation and all, but without it a lot more refineries would blow up and destroy towns…

And places like Pasadena would revert to being borderline uninhabitable

Who on this board is old enough to remember that Pasadena and the Ship Channel had a noticeable and noxious smell 24/7/365 throughout the 70's

Oh man, I can remember days with a strong north wind and it would all blow over Clear Lake. I get nostalgic for many things from my youth, but not that.

edit - And Pasadena is STILL uninhabitable, refineries or not.

Part of the reason they're so capital intensive is all of the govt interference via regulations. Gut regulations and get out of the way.

Refineries are capital intensive because they are devilishly complex machines that rely on highly specialized materials and require constant upkeep no matter the price of WTI or Brent. They require real experts to keep them in productive form.

That all occurs to serve a commodity production process that can go into surplus for decades at a time, destroying any sort of return on capital.

Capital markets hate the companies for those reasons, not Washington red tape. Any company prone to volatile margins negative return on capital is going to be shunned.

Sounds like it wouldn't hurt to gut regulations then, anyway, huh?

And i realize there's more to it...which is why I said they were part of it all.

Something may be happening. Market was down and has reversed up. WTI back over $101 and Brent almost $110. RBOB and diesel traded down and reversed hard too.

As someone who drinks/uses at least a gallon of Milk a week, it's cheaper now than it has been for years. I paid 2.42 and it was right at 3.00 the entire Biden disaster. I see people complaining about food prices but I just don't see it with what I consume except for beef .
Republicans may not fix all your problems but you can be damn sure Democrats cause ALL of them.

I can't quantify it item by item, but I know that despite consciously reducing the amount of unnecessary grocery items I buy, my overall grocery bill has continued to increase regardless. But, who knows.

Weve got 6 people in the house, we have cut back DRASTICALLY and are still spending more than we ever have.

Even just a few years ago I never would have thought that I could carry $300 worth of groceries from the car to the house in one trip.

Where is the chicken poster to tell you it is just a few cents to pay for the future of his kids? I mean, he spouted that crap for months and now, vanished.

$6.85 for diesel where I live. We have cut back a lot at our house. Luckily I just got a new job that I work from home with instead of a 150mi daily commute in a F250.

Let's not forget that inflation doesn't just mean things cost more - it means any cash you had is losing value.

If the real inflation numbers were reported, I think people would realize that the value of their cash on hand has been cut in half.

People will pay 2.50 for a gallon of milk, $2 for 20 oz of water, and $7 for 12 oz coffee without thinking much of it.

If the gen pop knew what it takes to get a gallon of gasoline refined and delivered to the pump I wonder if the *****ing would be reduced. Probably not.

Like all things in the war of agression Putin started, it can all stop with him ending his war and withdrawing his troops from the country he invaded.

It doesn't get any easier than that, yet for some reason Trump and his maga-Putin-sycophants won't accept that reality.

I remember getting AOL email forwards back in the early 2000s about high gas and how it compared to other liquids and a gallon of whiteout was the most valuable barrel of liquid.
