Gas was $3.859 at a 7-Eleven on 2600 Guadalupe Street in Austin, and I paid $3.309 after I received 55 cents off per gallon from the 7-Eleven rewards app.

Unlike a lot of items where cost increases have to be negotiated with a customer for reimbursement, diesel in trucking, rail, and ocean freight contracts is typically automatically passed thru due to fuel surcharge formulas that adjust weekly or monthly. Very likely that higher diesel costs get passed onto the consumer.

The opposite is true also. When diesel falls, it automatically adjusts downward.

Cap and invest is a smaller tax on gasoline than the Federally run tax, RFS (renewable fuel standard), that is at all time highs thanks to this administration's policies. Back in 2024 this was a 8-10 cent per gallon tax. Then this administration made a bunch of awful policy decisions and everybody (except farmers of course) is paying 36-37 cents per gallon on all the fuel you purchase. This was strictly a policy decision by this administration. Seems like California's cap and invest has lost to this administration's policies for dumbest gasoline tax. The ****ing RIN is worth more than the ethanol despite the fact that ethanol blending doesn't even need a subsidy to exist at this point.

I think you are missing the actual total Democrats as in CA want to tax Diesel/gas. And that carbon credit market is wildly unpredictable which is part of the reasons for the recent refinery shut downs. Making profits not only unlikely but also unpredictable has an impact on the market.

I think prices at the pump don't go up as much. There are 2 completely different markets but at same time related markets: Crude and Products.

The spread between Products and crude is huge. Refiners are printing money right now. There is a SPR for crude but not products. So crude prices have been capped a bit because the world is supplying the crude market with their reserves. But product supplies continue to dwindle so that's why prices at pump are much higher than what the oil price would normally indicate. The products prices aren't high because oil prices are high, they are high because there are tight production supplies

China actually lifted their product export ban which should supply the global market with more product. So I think oil prices rise but the products not so much. Refiners will lose some margin but still print money.

Friday after Saudi confirmed the news about their pipeline, the refining stocks sold off. That's because the refiners know their next barrel of oil will be more expensive than the price increase from the next barrel of product they sell.

This is making gas more expensive, not the price of crude.
