Yes, so I doubt it gets much traction.

Not the war in Iran you idiot.

It is the result of Ukraine attacks on Russian refineries.
Russian diesel is used in Russia and sold to Europe.
Because of refinery damage Russia is keeping more and exporting less.
That squeezes world supply and drives up prices. https://t.co/QBDlbh8hz4

It would be an enormous mistake, I have to agree with you.Quote:
US refiners currently produce far more diesel than the domestic market consumes and export the surplus (around 1.5 million barrels per day). A ban would trap that diesel on the Gulf Coast. Storage would fill quickly, diesel crack spreads would collapse, and refiners would cut crude runsS&P Global estimates by roughly 1.92 million barrels per dayto eliminate the surplus.
Really hope this doesn't go through, despite some reporting that it is happening. It's insanity. We need/want more diesel on the global market, not less.
If its a bad idea, then Trump will do it no matter what his advisors tell him.
Seems to be his MO as of late.

You'll know it's bad when Trump tries to start pitching export bans.

The oil companies are not paying more for oil, they are just selling it for more. Because of the stuff Iran is doing.

None of this is accurate imho. Refined products are being bid up to be shipped to Europe. Not related to Iran, which is functionally irrelevant at this point.
ETA: the oil business is very transactional and competitive. USO is still however trading at over 2x it's 52-week low. This is bound to come down as it is not a high profit margin industry.

Do you have any evidence the gulf coast refiners are treating US buyers with a discriminatory intent vs. selling to whoever buys their distillates? Ultimately they produce a product and sell it on the market, and could face liability as fiduciaries etc. if they agree not to obtain the maximum price they can.

Why wouldn't the refiners keep domestic prices low and offset it by higher export prices? We know the rest of the world needs the fuel. Let them pay for it.

Because that would be in violation of their duty to their shareholders.
We aren't a country that believes in setting prices based on feelings, especially in commodity markets.
For what it's worth, Americans are still getting a "good deal" on diesel relative to what most of the developed world is paying, due to differences in tax policy and transportation expenses.

The Saudis announced today they're getting out the same amount of oil now that they did on average in 2025 despite the temporary closure of the pipeline. When the pipeline reopens they will exceed last year's daily output.
Total oil exports via Hormuz from all countires are now roughly 3/4 of pre-war levels.

Down is better than up. I wish that was the case in the LBK, but hopefully soon.
Anyone know if this is the start of a trend to get back down to pre Trump Iran war prices, or just getting us back to where we were before the Houthis came into play?
