I wonder why they just didn't use deep fake tech themselves if it's literally so easy to bang it out in 2 days?
Because deep fake tech is just imitating something else. It's not creating new material. There are great cover versions of original songs out there, but that doesn't meant the cover artist is better than the person who originally wrote the song.

Luke talking to Mando and Grogu wasn't new material?

Well, we can probably assume force ghost Obi-Wan and Yoda continued training Luke.

Probably mostly while Luke was in meditation. More spiritual training than physical.

That's my take, anyway.
Yoda did tell him there was nothing more he had to teach him. I'm sure, along with meditation stuff with Obi-Wan there has to be him gathering knowledge in other ways. However, 5 years of training after going toe to toe with Vader easily gets him to a level where droids ain't sh-t

He did find all the old Jedi texts at some point too

The people filming Mando are responsible for every single element of the scene. Someone doing a deepfake just puts a face on one of the characters of the scene. It's the equivalent of Malcolm's speech about what John Hammond had done to create dinosaurs - stood on the shoulders of giants.

Ok, I guess when they were done I wonder why they didnt look at it and say, "Hmm, that doesn't look good at all. Let's go ahead and spend 2 more hours deep faking it."

I honestly don't care just think it's interesting why they wouldn't put out a better product when tech is sitting right there. Regardless, it was awesome.

You say Star Wars fans aren't objective, but honestly they are probably the most critical of SW.

Example: I had major issues with TROS and my brother (casual fan) loved it and disagreed with most of my issues.

So do you think the CGI was worthy of that moment?

Yes. 100%... I don't think it lessened my emotional reaction in the least. I'm a realist about what we are dealing with (time and technology). And the moment was 1000x more important than the execution of the moment.

As long as the buildup was legit (and it was) and the moment was honest within the context of the story, characters, and the overall meaning then it was not going to be ruined by less than perfect CGI.

That said I also would have been fine with a replacement actor but that has its own set of distractions which I think are more troubling in a brief scene like that then CGI is.

Here is why I think the tech is more important to you than the moment ... or why it can spoil the moment for you.

Not really slamming you for this, I understand now based on your investment in the series - that you are not anywhere near as emotionally invested in the characters or series and therefore the moment. You may understand the gravity of the moment but if that moment did not completely overwhelm you (like the reactions videos that have been posted here, like the other posters here describing leaping with joy, yelling out, celebrating with their kids, tears, etc.) then you didn't have the same experience and that is likely due to your lack of investment. I literally got goosebumps, chills down my spine, nearly moved to tears (and I don't cry in movies) and several other levels of reaction upon seeing it and have in every repeat viewing so far (4 and counting).

If you literally saw ANY SW movie during your lifetime for the first time on cable TV with commercials long after its theater release you are not invested like me or many of the posters. I was 11 in the theater in 1977 and had a literal life changing moment and have been deeply invested ever since. I saw SW 20+ times in the theater over its first long 1 year run. I've seen EVERY SW movie many times in the theater and always on day of release. I collected SW merch, I had SW bed sheets, SW lunchbox, I read the books, etc etc....I imparted SW onto my kids through complete ingraining from birth - lol.

You can dismiss it all you want for being less than perfect but the moment was perfect and the CGI could not ruin it for me - period. But I get why it doesn't have that effect on you. It's ok. You are just on a board/thread with a lot of SW people like me, not casual SW people. Different perspectives.

EDIT - just saw the reaction video above... watch that guy and his reaction his range of emotions, and the CGI did not affect him at all... it was so much more than that. It meant so much more. That's where many of us are.

I gotta be honest, the CGI probably didn't bother me becuase I had no idea who Moff Tarkin is or what he looks like.

Finally watched it with my wife and kids together - they had a weekend camp. My wife cinched the theory that those of us obsessed with movie technology are not going to be satisfied by probably anything we see until it's picture perfect. When Luke started talking, she grabbed my arm and said "How do they do that?" She was 100% sold. My super fan daughter starting crying when Mando took his helmet off and did not stop when the show ended. Her response was perfect for the fanbase Mando has created among kids "I just don't want Grogu to go away."

Now, see, this is fascinating to me. I'm not bagging on your wife at all; I just don't understand how this is possible with CGI that looked that blatantly fake. Has she not watched many movies with CGI'ed folks and doesn't have context or experience with seeing that?

I'm genuinely curious how some people can't tell. Maybe there really is something to some people's wiring on this.

She was really fascinated by the effects in Rogue One, especially with Peter Cushing since she wasn't really familiar with him from the original film.

The only other time I can think of here seeing someone de-aged is in the Ant-Man films with Michelle Pfeiffer and MIchael Douglas. But those two, and Sam Jackson in Captain Marvel, are relatively easy to do because thre is so much footage of them from the age you're trying to make them. What exists of Mark Hamill circa 1988?

It looks a lot better on the TV then on YouTube or my phone.

And you definitely shouldn't bag on my wife, she would kick the **** out of you.

My issue with the CGI was not that it was "bad" it is because they de-aged Luke TOO much. He looked like episode 4 Luke with no broken face.

Really???

I didn't think that at all - my first reaction was, wow, it does look like post crash Luke... but a younger post crash Luke. I think that was the smoothness of the skin that made it more youthful but the features were post crash. imho.

I could be off but thats my take.

That is a terrible analogy. The "original version" was mark Hamill 40 years ago. A CGI rendering done by disney is itself a "cover version" using overpriced technology that looks less realistic than some nut youtuber with a $200 rendering program and an associates degree from ITT tech.

I just assumed they were like water-tight doors on a ship. If the hull is breached, then they prevent the whole ship from losing air. They probably offer some protection, but they aren't completely armored.

Maybe it was already covered... but what about the connection between r2 and Grogu?

If Grogu was at the Jedi temple, would they have met back in the time of anakin and r2? Was r2 involved with rescuing Grogu?

There is no way to know if R2 and Grogu have met before. (edit: unless Dave Filoni tells us)

If there weren't blast doors, the Dark Troopers would have been in that room 5 minutes earlier killing everyone.
