You say Star Wars fans aren't objective, but honestly they are probably the most critical of SW.
Example: I had major issues with TROS and my brother (casual fan) loved it and disagreed with most of my issues.
So do you think the CGI was worthy of that moment?
Yes. 100%... I don't think it lessened my emotional reaction in the least. I'm a realist about what we are dealing with (time and technology). And the moment was 1000x more important than the execution of the moment.
As long as the buildup was legit (and it was) and the moment was honest within the context of the story, characters, and the overall meaning then it was not going to be ruined by less than perfect CGI.
That said I also would have been fine with a replacement actor but that has its own set of distractions which I think are more troubling in a brief scene like that then CGI is.
Here is why I think the tech is more important to you than the moment ... or why it can spoil the moment for you.
Not really slamming you for this, I understand now based on your investment in the series - that you are not anywhere near as emotionally invested in the characters or series and therefore the moment. You may understand the gravity of the moment but if that moment did not completely overwhelm you (like the reactions videos that have been posted here, like the other posters here describing leaping with joy, yelling out, celebrating with their kids, tears, etc.) then you didn't have the same experience and that is likely due to your lack of investment. I literally got goosebumps, chills down my spine, nearly moved to tears (and I don't cry in movies) and several other levels of reaction upon seeing it and have in every repeat viewing so far (4 and counting).
If you literally saw ANY SW movie during your lifetime for the first time on cable TV with commercials long after its theater release you are not invested like me or many of the posters. I was 11 in the theater in 1977 and had a literal life changing moment and have been deeply invested ever since. I saw SW 20+ times in the theater over its first long 1 year run. I've seen EVERY SW movie many times in the theater and always on day of release. I collected SW merch, I had SW bed sheets, SW lunchbox, I read the books, etc etc....I imparted SW onto my kids through complete ingraining from birth - lol.
You can dismiss it all you want for being less than perfect but the moment was perfect and the CGI could not ruin it for me - period. But I get why it doesn't have that effect on you. It's ok. You are just on a board/thread with a lot of SW people like me, not casual SW people. Different perspectives.
EDIT - just saw the reaction video above... watch that guy and his reaction his range of emotions, and the CGI did not affect him at all... it was so much more than that. It meant so much more. That's where many of us are.
