That's a foul and PK for me. Bruno cleated him in the Achilles. I get he's already going down but that's a pretty bad foul.

Actually, one side of the bracket contains these teams ranked in the top15:

#1 Belgium
#2 France
#5 Portugal
#6 Spain
#7 Italy
#13 Switzerland
#14 Croatia

The other half contains:

#4 England
#10 Denmark
#12 Germany

Whoever wins the first match of Germany/England has a great shot of making the finals. What a crazy good draw.

Yup. And if they make it to the final, they will have played all but one game in London. (Rome in the quarters)

What's crazy is that based on what I saw so far in the tournament, Hungary would almost assuredly have advanced from any other group.

Between this and LC's analysis of the bracket strength, the stars have aligned for England this year.

They'll still screw it up.

England v Germany at a tournament is a must see match...... so a bit of history......

1966 World Cup Final. England 4-2 in extra time. The 3rd goal by Geoff Hurst to give England the lead is disputed to this day. Hurst scored a hat trick as well.

1970 World Cup quarterfinal at Leon, Mexico. With England leading Alf Ramsey takes off the aging Bobby Charlton thinking he has the game won. The Germans have other ideas, rally, and win in extra time. Worse was Gordon Banks, the England keeper missing the game due to a mystery illness.

1972 Euros quarterfinal draw: In the old format the quarterfinals were home and home. The winners advanced to the semis with one of the 4 teams selected as host. The Germans win at Wembley 3-1.Gunter Netzer is imperious that night for the Germans. In the return in Berlin, Alf Ramsey picks a team of hard men trying to save face. it's 0-0. After the match Netzer complains that "the entire England team has autographed his leg". A testament to the ruthlessness of the English hard men. The Germans win the tournament.

1982 World Cup 2nd round in Madrid: 0-0 on the night in a 2nd round group game. Karl Heinz Rummenigge hits the crossbar late. Result means that England need to win by 2 goals in last group match vs Spain to reach semis. They don't and the Germans win the group and advance to the semi finals against France.

1990 World Cup at Turin: 1-1 (3-4) after penalties in a gripping semifinal. It's the famous "Gazza tears" match. The Germans take the lead when Paul Parker charges a free kick that hits him and somehow lands in the one spot where Peter Shilton can't reach and it's a goal. Gary Lineker equalizes late. Both sides hit the woodwork in extra time. It's on to penalties. Stuart Pearce's penalty is saved and Chris Waddle blazes over the bar. The Germans go on to the title.

1996: Euro semifinal at Wembley: In another gripping semi final, Gazza misses redemption by inches in extra time and in the shootout now England manager Gareth Southgate has his penalty saved. Andy Moeller scores his and the Germans go on to the title.

2000 Euro Group Stage: This is the only time the 2 sides have met in the group stage. England win but neither advance out of their group.

2010 World Cup 2nd round in South Africa: Famed for the no goal that really was for Frank Lampard. Instead of the teams being level they aren't. Germany take command in the second half and win 4-1.

OMG! This is hilarious! Never heard of some of these fan mishaps!

French fans confused Bucharest with Budapest to begin with
Quote:

Les Bleus were playing in the Hungarian capital of Budapest last Saturday afternoon but, according to Romanian newspaper Jurnalul National, the six hapless work colleagues boarded a flight that morning that landed more than 500 miles away in the Romanian capital of Bucharest.

Then confused Ukrainians with Hungarians
Quote:

They had been drinking in the city with some Ukraine fans they had met at the airport -- where neither the Romanian flags nor the language spoken by the officials at the airport made them realise that they had landed in the wrong place -- and travelled into the centre of town with them on the bus.

The Ukrainians were in Bucharest quite correctly, ahead of their country's final Group C game against Austria at the Arena Nationala, which was to be played on Monday evening.

"We thought they were Hungarian fans going to the game and we followed them, thinking that as they were from the city they knew the way to the stadium," one of the France fans told Jurnalul National.
You'd think the french would've learned from the 400 Spaniards nearly a decade earlier making the same mistake.

I can at least understand the Liverpool fans confusing Gent with Genk, at least they're still in the same country.

Then you have those that can at least get to the destination of the name: Wales (small village in England) as oppose to Wales and Frankfurt, the small German village, as opposed to Frankfurt the city.

Some European fans travel mishaps...

I could almost forgive them for confusing Ukrainians for Hungarians except for the fact that this was at the airport... if you think you're in Hungary, why on earth would there be a bunch of Hungarians hanging out at the airport right before a match? Even if they're Hungarians who lived abroad who returned to watch the match, they'd have local knowledge and wouldn't be hanging out in the airport bar.

Wow. UEFA announced the away goals rule is going away for future tournaments.

(I know this isn't Euro-specific, but figured it'd be of most interest here.)

No more parking the bus. Which might mean we see less upsets in the knock out rounds
Mathguy64
How long do you want to ignore this user?

IMHO it's going to make even more teams park the bus, especially in the 2nd half of the second legs. They will take their chances with ties and kicks.
KCup17
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Well yes but say a team won the away leg 2-1, under the current rule even after the opposing team scores a goal and ties it on aggregate the defending team could still sit back and cling to the away goal. In the new rule once the opposing team ties is on aggregate both will have to come out and try to get that next goal.

So yes we will see the park the bus strategy but once a goal is conceded they are playing with fire from there on out.

Taunting about an accident that killed people vs. a country invading and starting a world war seems quite different to me

Ghastly clearance leads to another Denmark goal. It was something you wouldn't expect from 12 year old.

Terrible no call lead to Denmark fast break.
