But judges can set bail that is extremely high. And that would have been appropriate in this case.
That is done all over the State of Texas. Except in the big cities where the judges are idiots.

I'd argue the bigger issue is with the back end. $1mm bail is fairly high, high enough for this case? Absolutely not. But still, if a bail bond company would truly charge 10% and have the potential to pay that bond this guy wouldn't be getting out. Instead, they know the city/county will never collect and let these guys out for nothing.

That is the part I just don't understand. The city and county are always complaining about how they are so strapped for cash and need more money, but the uncollected bonds are a huge pot of money that the county is entitled to under law and they are making no effort to collect. All they have to do is demand the payment and tell any company that doesn't pay their bonds that lack of payment means automatic forfeiture of their ability to operate in Harris County.

It appears to be that colossal ****-bag, Greg Glass. IIRC, he's the guy who has refused to hold in-person court sessions since March 2020 (may have changed recently) and has been handing out absurdly low or no-bail to scumbags charged with violent crimes like tic-tacs.

HPD didn't send an officer when my truck was stolen this morning. Took 45 minutes on hold to file a report then 5 hours for them to report stolen. Onstar lost tracking by the time they got around to filing the report.
