Get Powell back, keep Burke, get a 3 and D player in the off season and a healthy KP and they'll look much tougher next year.

The mavs front office incorrectly assumed the start of free agency was going to be slow. About 80% of players signed on the first night while the Mavericks were having a celebratory dinner with porzingis.
The main guy we were pursuing that was ready to sign was Kemba, however, he and Doncic most likely would not have meshed as well with their play-styles. Short term, yeah maybe we get the 5 or 6 seed and win the first round this year, but long term it would probably be better for us to not sign someone big this past season and instead draft someone who can play defense and then go after Donovan Mitchell

Mavericks also have an established relationship with his agent and family after having his brother on the team. We could make a massive push for him after next season.

Not entirely sure the Mavs will have a full max contract to give Giannis. Think they'll be a mil or two short after signing their draft pick this year assuming they do nothing to impact 2021-2022 cap space in free agency. Not to say they couldn't figure out a mil or two in favor of Giannis, but last I checked that was the reality and that's before revenue losses from COVID-19.

Plus Luka missed a good chunk of Game 3 with his ankle sprain and Porzingis missed a good chunk of Game 1 with a bogus ejection.
All in all it was a pretty solid showing. In an ideal world it would've gone better, but given the circumstances it went well.

Is there a realistic chance of signing Giannis? I haven't heard that and done foresee him coming to Dallas.
There's been some murmurs that we're pushing hard for Giannis and selling our culture and our embrace of European talent. We've kept a strong relationship with his family and agent. If we don't get him we're going hard for Spider

The most likely player was Kamba, who I don't think would have worked well with Luka.
As others have said, best way to play this is to sit out FA this year then go all in for one of elite FAs in 2021.

If y'all have a sub to The Athletic I'd encourage you to read the article about us going after Luka. IIRC, there were comments about Nelson and our head of European scouting and ties to Giannis
A team with Luka, KP and Giannis would be unfair for about 10 years.

I'm torn. He's a middling defender, but then you have games like Game 4 where he very quietly scored 19 in the 2nd half while Luka was going off. I'd probably keep him though.
Kleber really disappointed. He shot 37% from 3 during the season, and 19% in the playoffs. Granted, he's young and it's his first series, and he was working his ass off on defense. Still, really needed some distance points from him, especially after KP went out.

The Mavs reportedly tried to pursue Danny Green, Pat Bev, Al Horford, and Kemba Walker this off season. Kemba is the only 1 that would have helped this team past round 1.
Mavs should have a max contract slot in summer of 2021, but no one has any idea what the new CBA or Cap will be due to the variability of impact that COVID has and will have going forward.

Well if Giannis decides he won't resign with Milwaukee and tells them that it would be in their best interest to sign and trade him to another team.
We'd have to give up a whole lot to get him though.

Adding Giannis makes Mavs the obvious favorite. Luka/KP/Giannis would be the best 3 in the league.

He can be traded and then signed to a new deal, but it'd be better to get him in free agency.

Don't see anyone trading for Giannis other than the Warriors. A sign and trade isn't going to happen next offseason either, that's a rarity.

Only way we're landing Giannis is waiting until his contract is up, and that is still "pie in the sky" BS
The Bucks might take KP and Luka to send Giannis. Anything else and they aren't picking up the phone. I expect a boring offseason this year with a little shuffling. Summer 2021 is going to be insane, and if we can't get a star FA next year then we never will
