Haven't read the whole thread yet, but IMO the biggest challenge for HBO will be to have the viewers wait for a whole year, after the red wedding, and the "death" of Arya. I was able to continue reading through Book 3, and so the Red Wedding wasn't as bad for me (Plus Mommy Stark was really annoying me in the chapters leading up to the Red Wedding).

Since the RW is purportedly episode 9, they'd still be able to reveal Arya was alive in the finale and end the season on a higher note to carry people over to the next season.

i'm trying to think what the season 3 finale will have...the purple wedding is too late in the book for the timeline to work, i think

maybe jon and the NW's initial stand on their side of the wall? save the big battle with the wildling army for next season

Well, it wont be the Red Wedding for sure because thats going to be Episode 9. So they'll have 1 more episode to try and keep the heartbroken viewers and have them excited for Season 4. I think they'll attempt to leave it on a high note. I forget the timeline of things, but maybe Tyrion making preparations to leave, or signs pointing to Jon taking control of the Wall, etc..

Next season is going to be depressing. Every time you start to like a character GRRM kills them in some terrible way. I'll be curious to see what the viewership thinks after season 3.

yeah i know that, but the purple wedding would be a happy note for viewers, kind of an "oh **** yes, FINALLY" thing

but i don't think the timeline works, plus there's been no mention of any castings for the dornish

The problem with killing Joff so quickly is that you would have to space out Tyrion's trial for the entire 4th season capping off with Tywin's death. I think the most you can do with it is 6 episodes.

S04E04 - Regicide, Tyrion fingered (not in a good way)
S04E05 - Tyrion in jail forming defense, jamei and Varys visit
S04E06 - Judges chosen, Tyrion appeals to Dorne
S04E07 - Trial starts
S04E08 - Shae is called, Tyrion gets thrown a loop, recess, demands trial by combat
S04E09 - Mountain wins, "tomorrow you die"
S04E10 - Tomorrow shows up, Varys springs him, kill kill kill

Thats about as much as you can space it out, any more and you are boring viewers. To have it arch 11 (hour-long) episodes starting at the end of S3 would be hell.

THIS. If I recall, there was a bit of disappointing tit-drought in the second season. First season was hype as ****, though.

Edit: forgot the

Regarding the fate of Jon Snow, I am almost more interested in who tried to kill him rather than how he will be brought back. When I read the chapter, it seemed to me like all his stabbers were being controlled by skinchanger(s). Wick didn't seem to know what he was doing and Bowen was crying. Seemed very much Hodor-like as opposed to brothers of the night watch. Couple this with Ghost being especially freaked out and known skinchangers being in the midst, it would seem the black brothers were pseudo-framed.

I may be completely wrong, but I thought it was clear that they were betraying him due to his increasingly risky decisions (forging an alliance with the wildlings, letting people and creatures from north of the Wall to pass, etc). It seemed pretty clear that Jon was alienating many, many Brothers with his decisions, and had ignored some very obvious warning signs regarding morale. I think their ambivalent reactions when stabbing him were indicative that their decision to assassinate him was a very difficult one, and that they genuinely respected, some even liked, Jon, but could not stand by and allow him to make decisions that they believe would cause the ruination of the Night's Watch and perhaps even Westeros.
OlsenField

That's fair, though I am not sure why they would choose that point to kill him. He was about to send away a decent chunk of the wildling fighting force on a ranging and then take himself and a bunch of wildings (and no black brothers) south. It would seem a much safer bet to gamble on him dying vs Bolton or at least waiting until the wildlings were on the other side of the wall. If anything, you should kill him before he allowed 3 thousand wildlings under the wall.

When Wick attacked Jon, "his hands upraised as if to say, Not me, It was not me." I think that could be a very literal motion. Jon had just delivered a physical shock which may have allowed Wick control back over his body. And nothing I've read about Bowen makes me think he is a man who would kill with tears running down his cheeks. With Ghost, it is possible he was freaking out because he sniffed out a plot, but I think it is equally possible he was freaking out because the presence of a skinchanger.

I'm interested in y'all's opinion on a popular theory surrounding Jon's "death". A lot of people on the ASoIaF forums think that he may actually be dead, but will be resurrected my Melisandre which makes him eligible to go against his oaths to the Nights Watch an have a legitimate claim to the King in the North, honoring the note that Robb left in his stead that Jon will no longer be a ******* and will succeed him as king.

Thoughts?

alright, time for fanboyish post after some time to reflect and watch the trailer multiple times

STUFF I SAW!

-cat and robb watching the burning boat - gotta be papa tully, looks like we get some riverrun (can't remember if this was ever confirmed or not)
-mance rayder with the yelling, not sure which wildling was scaling the wall...i don't think that was tormund giantsbane in the books but i do know he's cast so maybe they switched it to him? looked like a big redhead
-jon and ygritte in the caves! best sex scene in the series coming up
-the hound fighting someone with a flaming sword! thoros!
-jaime screaming in pain! thinking we all know what that is...i'm curious who they'll have doing it though, i think the bloody mummers have been basically cut out of the series
-dany with the unsullied army (i think that matches the timeline), plus a bigger dragon!

getting closer!

It was the Hound's trial with Lord Beric. We also see Beric light his sword earlier in the clip.

and it was Tormund climbing the wall.

There was also the rebellion at Craster's Keep near the end, right before the Jon-Ygritte sex scene preview.

The Hound fights Ser Beric. He ignites the sword with his blood... it's in the trailer too.

A few random thoughts:

-Will be nice to finally get some Riverrun action... Lord Hoster and Blackfish. Wish they would have introduced them earlier in the show, but you have to prioritize characters.

-Can't wait to see Dany and her newly-purchased Unsullied demolishing the slave traders at Astapor.

-Margaery Tyrell is hot. Would.

-Going to be hard to lose "show" Robb. They handled that character masterfully in S2, basically writing him a story from scratch instead of keeping him holed up at Riverrun. "Book" Robb is underwhelming when you read the books AFTER watching the first two seasons, as I did.

-Bran's story will be interesting. When/where will they come across Jojan and Meera? Will Osha and Rickon split off on their own? Haven't gotten into greensight at all yet in the series.

Regarding jon snows death, it seemed to me that they were all against his decisions as the other posted and that it was a difficult decision. Remember, he was "leaving" the wall to go south. What is the punishment for deserting?

Also, im almost thinking that jon changed into ghosts skin when he died. The first of the book where valymir sixskins chapter showed that whole process.....I never understood why that chapter was there until I saw jons death. I think it was alnost foreshadowing jons death. Also throughout the book he and melisandre speak of it and he is becoming stronger with it (like the rest of the starks). I think he'll be ghost.

Cant wait to see the rw. I hated robb dying but the finale will definitely include stoneheart bc we saw pictures of her. Maybe finally shows stoneheart with dondarion.....also left alone by Nymeria.....and maybe greywinds head sewn on robbs body.

Quick question.....what was up with the super old lady that a few of the travelera ran into around sto ey sept? Vaguely remember her at times but cant remember what she said.

The ghost of high heart.... She might've caused Summerhall.

I'm curious about how they keep Catleyn involved. Does she re-appear at the end of S03E10 or S04E10?

Episode 10 is going to have to end on a high note to keep the casual viewer. All of my buddies who haven't read the books still expect this to be a fulfilling revenge story between Starks and Lannisters. They fully expect Robb to walk up to the Iron Throne and ram a sword through the roof of Joffrey's mouth.

They'll lose people.

I really cant wait to see those perceptions shattered. Some of my friends are like that and I'm waiting for the fallout. Gonna be a good show.

The Stark dynasty is broken with winterfell sacked and robb dead. The next son is a cripple/tree and Rickon is a child. Who will bring the family back to power? Arya? She is forsaking her surname to become a faceless man. Does anyone think littlefinger really has the stark family's interest at heart as he guides Sansa?! The answer is no. He may use her to bring houses together but he hates Starks more than he loves his dead Tully.

Speaking of which as a player who lives on information we sure didn't see him try to save Catelyn, nor do we see his wrath after the fact.

Rickon will takeover Winterfell, he's on Skagos right now and they've had a rocky relationship with Winterfell for a long time. It's should be highlighted in the upcoming "She-Wolves of Winterfell", he'll heal the wounds between Wildlings and Northerners.
