MW, I'm pretty sure in the books we don't know much of anything about Shae.

quote:
it would have been OK, but it was so anticlimactic and the fact that we know Dany goes freaking NOWHERE over the next couple books

I think we need to prepare ourselves for the show heavily altering what Dany does in future seasons. I think they might speed things up a bit.

From the non-spoiler thread:

quote:
Loved Joffrey getting owned

Referring to the small council scene. This is the one thing I didn't like about the interactions in the show b/w Tywin and Joff. In the book, Joffrey is less bratty and spoiled and more like "I don't give a sh_t who you are, I'm the one in charge here."

At least, I always interrupted it that way.

Redline, that would be a huge improvement IMO. Not sure where GRRM is going with Dany but her storyline has been a beating.

I sure hope so. After this point in the books is where I thought the story really, really gets bogged down in crap that doesn't matter. I think a substantial departure from the specifics of the book while still following the overall plot line would be the best thing imo.
jenn96
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It don't think they'll have a choice; GRRM's editors could afford to have him spend 3-4 pages on exposition and menus every chapter, and progress the story as slow as he wants. The budget guys at HBO won't be as tolerant. I suspect that the end of season 5 will have us at the end of ADWD and the books won't be finished by then (to say the least).

I expect pretty significant divergence from the books from here on out.
redline248
How long do you want to ignore this user?
So we know season 4 is book 3 part 2.

Season 5 - half combination of books 4/5?
Season 6 - rest combination of 4/5?
jenn96
How long do you want to ignore this user?
That seems logical to me. I think AFFC/ADWD together may take more than 1 season, but can't imagine that they could fill two. Unless they just start taking the story further than ADWD did, which is a very likely possibility.

From the non-spoilers thread:
quote:
Dany is not only building an army, she is uniting all of the slaves and building a kingdom.

Oh, to be so young.

did anyone notice Gilly mispronouncing 'maester' as 'master'? that was a funny little inside joke with book readers

I thought so. Reading the books, I got the distinct impression that she cared more about gold and power than Tyrion. In a way, it made Tyrion even more pathetic in that he was forever the guy who thinks the stripper actually likes him. It made it more satisfying when Tyrion got his revenge on her after she betrayed him.

In the show, she apparently loves Sansa and turns down a bag of diamonds to stay with Tyrion, who she apparently actually loves.

Interesting to see how she goes from this to banging the father of the man she "loves."
jenn96
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Both the banging and her testimony at Tyrion's trial can be pretty easily explained even if she loved Tyrion - she was afraid of what Tywin and Cersei would do to her. Or she's making a coldly calculated ploy to go with who she sees as the winners. Love and self-interest aren't mutually exclusive. And she may very well have thought Tyrion DID kill Joffrey; he has a lot of good reasons.

I actually didn't see her refusing the diamonds as an act of great love - more like petulance. She may have figured she could get more out of Varys later when he's more desperate.

She also testifies against him which seems very out of character for the show Shae. I'm assuming the show is going to "fix" this by having her go into a petty, jealous rage, possibly because she thinks Tyrion loves Sansa or something corny like that. They, for some reason continue to paint her as a very jealous individual.

Ya I think we might she her not get killed by Tyroin.

Also, the show appears to indicate what I've believed, that the Blackfish is going to have a much bigger role to play in the future books. Allowing him to survive the wedding when up till now in the books, is a disposable character. Also, the conversation between Frey and Bolton that seems to foreshadow Blackfish killing Walder, that coupled with Sam's Rat Cook analyzation.

America's destiny is not of our own choosing. We did not seek nor did we provoke an assault on our freedom and our way of life. We did not expect nor did we invite a confrontation with evil. Yet the true measure of a people's strength is how they rise to master that moment when it does arrive.

Ramsay is like an evil version of Samwise Gamgee.

I really, really hope they aren't replacing Arya killing the Tickler at the inn with the scene of her killing random Frey last night. I was really hoping to see her show off her acting chops and kill someone on her list, especially the way she screams all of his questions back at him while stabbing him.

Thought the image of the wolf's head on Robb's body was more heartbreaking than anything in the Red Wedding. Not only did they die via treachery, but now the Freys are taking it to the point of human desecration.

The Dany scene was blah, although the final visual was cool. Still, there was no suspense there. I doubt any non-bookies really thought there was going to be something bad happening to her.

I liked that they showed Sansa being a bit of a conspirator with some naughty ideas for Tyrion - giving us a hint of what's to come when Littlefinger starts weaving his spell on her when they are at the Eyrie together.

Negative Throckmorton
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The tickler is already dead, Arya will surely get needle back, but we won't get that awesome scene where she "interrogating" the tickler.
Elliot P. Campbell
How long do you want to ignore this user?
yeah the tickler was jaqen's first kill in the show. kinda disappointing

i think polliver still has Needle though, so they might run into him still

Do you think Shae telling the Spider that if Tyrion wants her to leave, he should tell her himself shows how pissed she is and that drives her to just say screw it and do what she wants? i.e. hooking up with Tywin to piss off Tyrion like the book?
jenn96
How long do you want to ignore this user?
They still need to meet up with Tolliver, etc because that's where the Hound is wounded, and the reason he and Arya separate. Unless the writers are planning to take all that in a different direction.

If the show writers wanted to give the book readers a "Red Wedding" moment they will actually have Sandor get killed there. I know I would throw the TV across the room. I suspect the Hound has a big role to play in the rest of it but in this story, anything can happen.

another thing I noticed/departure from the book, was Jamie and Cercie's re-uniting.

In the book he basically pulled her dress up around her waist and had his way. In last night's episode he just kind of wagged his stump and she starred back, clearly dissappointed.

I think that was done to purposely speed up the timetable (on the show) for them turning against each other.

It also happened in the book over joff's corpse, while she was on her period

I'm glad they cut that disgusting scene out

Personally, I always imagined the Blackfish joining up with Jon Snow when he inevitably(in my mind) makes his run at fixing Westeros.

The show runners have said they have no intention of going past 7 seasons, so I bet they start with book 4 and 5 story lines next season.
aggie93
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Actually I think the quote is they plan on 7 Seasons, not any hard and fast rule that 7 is the drop dead number. It will really depend on if Martin finishes somehow in time and if the show maintains its popularity.

I can't see them getting to Season 7 and Martin is about to release Book 7 and they just go, "Nope, we're done. No reason to do a final season to wrap up the story."

Loved the ending with Dany, so I guess I'm in the minority. I feel like the show has done an amazing job of connecting us with her character and story line. In the books, the majority of readers I know (myself included) disliked all the non-Westeros story lines. The imagery and music of that scene was incredible, and it was the positive note the non-readers needed to make them tune back in in 9 months. If you go pure revenge in the ending, you are only playing to those that like the show for its violence. I think Dany is much more representative of hope than unCat.

As for the number of TV series seasons vs. number of books, I'd personally love to see a prequel involving the arrival of Aegon the Conqueror (many years in the past). You could run the show all the way up to Robert winning the throne if the rating/fan interest remains solid.
LawAg05
How long do you want to ignore this user?
imo:
Season 4 - book 3 part 2 & some of 4/5.
Season 5 - finish 4/5
Season 6 - TBD

Also, I don't think HBO would have agreed to invest in such a costly show if they didn't have the ability to complete the story, even if that means finishing it on their own terms.

Benioff said this about the number of seasons:
quote:
"We don’t want to become a show that outstays its welcome and tries to turn each book into three seasons," Benioff told EW. "Part of what we love about these books and the show is this sense of momentum and building toward something. If we tried to turn this into a 10-season show we’d strangle the golden goose.”
