In a vacuum, there isn't much wrong with Daario. He's just a mercenary who has no fear and wants to get with Dany. The annoyance is more on how Dany fawns over him and makes bad choices around him. For me it was the frustration of them building up the Quentyn thing all book and setting things up for her not to marry the uber ****** guy from Mereen and FINALLY get out of there. Then she decides, "Nah, I'll just go ahead and say screw it to going to Westeros and marry the uber ****** but in the meantime I need to go have butt sex with Daario!"

It's not Daario's fault that Dany fell for him, it's just not the guy you want her with. Admittedly the blue hair and gold teeth thing makes it even more hair pulling. It also is further enhanced because you know that Martin was stuck with the Mereenese Knot for so long and you read it and it's like, "THIS is what he came up with after all of that?!!?"

Oh, and he is also so clearly untrustworthy and all about himself with no concern whatsoever for Dany doing the right thing or fulfilling her destiny. He becomes her replacement for Jorah who had his faults but you never questioned he truly loved her and wanted her to go back to Westeros to fulfill her destiny.

Personally, I could tell Quentyn was a waste of time all along.

It certainly felt like it was a waste of time but I also was thinking, "There has to be a reason Martin is spending so much time on this guy. He has a purpose." As it stands his "purpose" seems to be a very minor one, maybe to help fulfill the prophecy of "The Sun sets in the West".

So many seemingly wasted pages in DWD.

I think his purpose was pretty much change the course of events for Dorne. Doran sent him to Dany so that he could take Arianne's place. Now with him gone the chance for Dorne to ally with a Targaryen resides with her and Aegon. i'm not sure what the final motivation with Dorne is but it has to be more than revenge for Elia. He did spend way to damn much time getting to it though.

Yea...the Dornish daughter is their only chance to be brought into the fold.

I get it, it's just clumsy for a guy like Martin to get so little out of a POV character that he built up. It was just too predictable as well. I wonder if something happens with his companions I suppose.

As a reader, it was obvious Martin lost his way in those books. I'm hopeful the show can just cut most of that out by combining books and tell a coherent story while being concise. So far, the show has done an excellent job of choosing what to cut out.

I think he felt like introducing Dorne into the series. They have been largely left out until books 4 and 5.

I HOPE that the show will do a better job with AFFC and ADWD since those storylines are all happening concurently correct? That should help alleviate some of the boredom from the slower storylines in each of those books

To make this a successful show in the following seasons, the writers will have to combine AFFC and ADWD.

I originally read all 5 books in published order when ADWD came out in 2011 and much of that book became consfusing because it is meant to be concurrent in most places with AFFC.

Right now I'm rereading in chronological order. I suggest everyone do this on future rereads. Here's a good chronological order link: Combined order of AFFC & ADWD

These books are much more enjoyable when read like this.

Arguably the three biggest leads aren't even in AFFC. No way in hell they film that as the book was written.

Yea, that's what I was trying to convey, poorly at that...the series will have to do the AFFC and ADWD storylines concurrently, not AFFC one season then ADWD the next...it should help the flow of the storylines for the show that didn't translate as well when reading the books because those POV characters weren't around

There are a few things that while now seem inconsequential or make no sense Martin has said we will see explained. including the shifting of chapter names from Characters to descriptions of the character. I think there will eventually be a payoff or surprise directly resulting from it we just can see yet.

I tend to think of it how i view Jon in the TV show or in re-reads. I know the character he became so my view of him is slanted, the same with Tyrion - we know the **** he did and though after the PW and his tru character so the whitewashing appears more severe than if were had only read that far in the books. Its essentially a dichotomy of hindsight on some things and ignorance on whats coming. Hell maybe Dany takes KL, Doran gets that Quentin died being burnt by her dragons and lets loose the wildfire. Either way he has to be important somehow, if not i agree it is pretty bad.

i believe that the producers have already confirmed that next season will have parts of AFFC and ADWD in it. I believe that the rest will be covered in season 5 probably in a near chronological order like in the Boiled leather suggested reading, which i am about to start. Season's 6 and seven should be the last two books i'd guess.
