In our best 11, I like Jedi and Dest, and the defensive parts of the games of our MMA midfield as pretty competitive on the international level, but honestly, England's entire roster is top to bottom better than ours. ...but with luck, solid defending, and hoping for Southgate to Southgate it up, you never know; our boys could steal a point in a 0-0 draw.

Here's my prediction.

Lose to Wales.
Tie against England.
Need to win against Iran to advance and we lose 2 nil.

I like your optimism but I think its going to be something like 4-0/5-1 to the English. There is a big gulf between these two teams in terms of quality and I think it will really show up in the second 45 minutes of that match. And even though they have Southgate on their sideline, we counter with GGG.

get a point v Wales- start sipping some Kool-Aid and think we've got a pretty good chance for 3 pts vs Iran and feel good about going to knockouts.

get 3 points vs Wales- chug Kool-Aid, convince ourselves we have a shot to draw England, assume we're beating Iran for 3 points, and have a chance to finish top of the group and higher seed in knockout round.

lose to Wales- our pets heads are falling off, assume we lose badly to England, and Iran won't even matter; we're going home regardless.

sadly, I get the same feeling. Gregg has said he is looking to be aggressive. 3-0 or 4-0 with Kane getting one or two late when we start to press forward

Pickford with a Rob Green-like howler on a Gio shot from long range

eta: recalled this video with Dempsey and Green from a while back. Cool conversation about that goal and pretty emotional for players

My starting 11 for USA-England.

These are not what I think the coaches will play, just my speculation. Not sure what Southgate will do, or Ggg.

USA

Turner
Dest Ream Zimmerman Robinson
Musah Adams McKennie
Weah Aaronson Pulisic

England

Pickford
Al-Arn Stones Dier Shaw
Mount Rice Bellingham
Sterling Kane Saka

I'm really pretty clueless on England, other than I hope Maguire plays. As for the USA, I like Aaronson to be a pest and provide for others. We have no great 9's, so play a false 9.

We have never lost to England in the World Cup, and that goes back from relatively recently, to all the way back over 70 years.

I like our chances, our team, and our coach. We can keep our steak against England alive, and we can make it out of this group…

flip Ream to left side, and we already know he pairs really well with Antonee.

...but are you calling Aaronson a #9 CF after the USMNT social media released the roster with him listed as a midfielder? This lineup looks more like a 4-4-2 diamond with Aaronson as the #10 CAM.. i like it, problems with 4-4-2 is those two forwards should be a bigger profile forward rather than a little winger like CP and I don't really like a lineup that don't have Reyna in it.

I wonder how much and how exactly Greggg plans on using Ferreira, Haji,. ...starting Ferreira or Haji at anytime means we're taking one of our 11 best off the pitch and we're certainly not playing our best 11.

I actually like our chances against England. I think we match up well with them. Obviously, they have more world-class players on the roster than us, but nobody that is super dangerous other than Kane.

I'm not afraid of their defense, TBH. TAA isn't really play great these days. Walker has been kinda hurt. Luke Shaw is meh.... but he scored a great goal once in the Euro. Center backs are no better than ours. Trippier is a beast but will he start against us???

Midfield has talented players but none are so overwhelmingly amazing compared to our MF trio. I'll take Adams, McKennie, and Musah over Mount, Henderson, and Philips or whoever they roll out. Now the real problem is what to we do with Saka and Sterling out wide. Can Jedi and Dest neutralize them? Big questions there.

The place England is superior to us is depth. They can bring on 5 players that are better than our 5 off the bench. So we have to play close to 90 with our primary 11 when they can bring fresh legs on and keep playing the normal system.

and I think Ferreira starts for the USA in all 3 games.

As you said, I want the best 11 on the field. Reyna would be first sub, I just like Weah better. I like Aaronson up top to just buzz around and be a pest for 70 minutes and help provide for others, maybe get a "right place, right time" goal. He's been very good at Leeds, knows English style of play, and is fearless.

I like their fullbacks and I like our 2 starting fullbacks. Dest and Antonee are as competitive as any two they start - athletically and technically. They have depth that we don't.

laugh about Macguire all we want, but he won't start or play that much for Southgate this time, I don't think. Our Long - Zimmer tandem last time we saw our boys vs Japan was awful. We need to be much better on the back line to limit chances for Kane, Sterling, Foden, Rashford, Saka, etc.... and our guys up front- will aaronson, ferreria, pulisic, weah, gio, etc. be creative enough or clinical enough to break through and finish vs TAA/Walker/Shaw and CBs like Dier & Stones?
Quote:

I'll take Adams, McKennie, and Musah over Mount, Henderson, and Philips or whoever they roll out.
Defensively, yes. Technical ability and tactical awareness - in keeping possession, distribution, switching the field, etc.: not even close their MF is far better than our MF, IMO.

Great points. You're probably right about Ferreira but I really wish Aaronson would get significant time against them. And I agree Saka and Sterling will be problems. Or Foden, Grealish, Rasford... Gonna be tough, but our starting 11 should be able to hang with them and hopefully get a good result.

I think CP will be primed to kick some ass and prove some things. We'll see.

They aren't as good as we on this board are making them out to be. TAA is a liability on the right. Can be exposed and their midfield really isn't all that impressive.

By midfield I mean Gallagher, mount, Bellingham, Phillips and Rice.

Also their center backs are absolute rubbish. Dier, Maguire and Coady. I'm not saying we beat them but I also don't think England will progress that far in the tourney

The highlighted part - that's what this boils down to - their attack versus our defense. They have world class players across the attack and we have...Aaron Long and Walker Zimmerman. It will take Turner doing his best imitation of Timmy Howard vs Belgium to keep this close.

Just listening to an interview with Jedi, McKennie and Adams...England doesn't scare them. Love that confidence.

And the combo of Jedi and Ream having close to, what, 60+ games together is huge.

Who is Englands defensive midfielder? Surely they don't play a Henderson/Rice combo. None of the top 6/7 teams plays an england defensive midfielder (i dont consider Henderson one).

I do hope to see Sterling playing some wing back.

Exactly. England is talented and has greater depth than we do. They're also pretty old and slow at some key positions. Could they come out and dominate and beat us 3-0? Sure, I guess. I could also see us come out fired up and take the game to them. I predicted it'll be a 0-0 draw, but I think it'd be an exciting game with lots of back and forth.

Phillips plays CDM, and I think Bellingham along with Rice or Henderson.

https://www.90min.com/posts/england-world-cup-2022-squad-announcement-live

here is a projected depth chart of their roster from the above link - looks like a 3 man back line is what they expect with Shaw and Trippier or TAA as wing-backs

I have a hard time thinking Kyle Walker would be used as a CB especially with Trippier next to him. Those 2 are very similar players with Trippier providing better service of the 2

I do think Walker plays that role at times for club… Trippier is definitely more attacking and more suitable for a wing back role than Walker.

This is an intriguing conversation regarding the USMNT roster. They are young, hungry, athletic and, most importantly, don't have the burden of history/futility permeating the roster.

I'm concerned about the pace of our CBs and lack of size/physicality with our front runners. Very interested to see what combination starts and who sees meaningful minutes off the bench. I think Sargent sees meaningful minutes but also think you might see Morris (not a fan personally) come off the bench as he is decent in the air and a scrapper inside the 18.

Very excited about our middle 3 - I think they can be a matchup nightmare for some opponents - Adams is a cerebral player, McKinne is super talented and Musah just loves to play direct and go at back lines.

As for predictions:
1-1 tie vs Wales
2-0 loss vs England
2-0 win vs Iran

Didn't know Bellingham was a Brit. Thats a bummer.

If USMNT can press, those CBs would be guys that have trouble distributing.

(Jinx protected) i would much rather face Sterling and Mount vs Foden and Saka. Saka is probably the best 1v1 dribbler and Foden is just a nightmare.

What oh no said. Trippier is a wingback in England's system and Walker is a right center back in a back three. I'm really surprised he made it back for the WC actually.

I'm not sure how restrictive this thread is but wife and I are going to be in San Miguel de Allende for both a US and Mexico match. I had a boss that was in Italy during a WC and said the whole town came out to plaza to watch matches. Hoping for the same in SMA, should be fun.

I guess maybe? I'm not a city fan but when I watch them all I see is Walker playing as that right back. And city usually plays with 4 in the back. I am a Newcastle fan and that's the same spot that Trippier plays. I guess he could play a CB with a back 3 but Walker's strength tends to be his pace.

Edit: but I also don't watch any of Englands games so I am unaware of how Southgate uses him. Just seems weird since they both are pacy players who often get into the attack
