This probably isn't as funny as I think it is but I'm absolutely dying. Have to listen to get the full effect.

This is an interesting article, and I think they are onto something with this thought process.

https://theathletic.com/3473297/2022/08/10/player-roles-the-athletic/

Also, you can get subscriptions to the athletic for $1 on sale pretty easily, if you are worried about paying for it.

Without linking the whole article, they essentially address the current way of thinking of someone being a '10' or an '8', but its not really a great description of what that player might do.

An example, without getting into all their descriptions and analytics is like this
For Advanced Midfielders they would have roles of box crasher, creator, and orchestrator.
So its more describing where you would likely see this player on the field, what they tend to do during the game

I wouldnt be married to any of the naems they have created, but I like the idea of being able to describe how a player plays beyond saying "they're a 9" when there are a lot of ways a striker can be deployed

The schedule for the US is unchanged, right? I believe it was always 10pm local, 2pm Eastern.

Very good read and it's interesting to hear them talk about their data processing and reduction to create the categories of players. Here's a graphic in the tweet that includes all their types for those without Athletic membership.

Honestly not much I disagreed with here. Would love it if a striker just stepped up sometime in the next couple months.

Interesting that he includes Pefok.

I haven't really liked what I've seen from Pefok… but I could see Siebatcheu making the cut.

Can I get this converted into Football Manager player roles, please?

Thoughts? No major complaints here. If healthy, I'd like to see Gio as a false 9.

We have to find a way to get our best players all on the field. Ferreira essentially plays 9 as a false 9, so I prefer Gio there. Hopefully he gets some time as a 9 this fall with Dortmund.

I hope Long isn't our second center back alongside Zimmerman. Hopefully it is Richards or one of the other options. Long is a real liability for me.

I just have big doubts about that midfield. McKennie and Adams are wonderful. But I feel like Musah is kinda just a decent guy. He's not gonna be able to be like a shadow striker or a box crasher that allows a deep lying forward to create goals and he's not defensive enough to free up Dest to be a player who's job is to provide attacking width, and I think you have to do one of those two things in there somewhere if we are going to score goals

I think pretty much everybody has the inclination to play beautiful attacking-passing-possession soccer. But if I was in charge I'd put Acosta in there instead of Musah, Reyna instead of Ferriera and the entire offense would be to have Pulisic, Reyna, Dest etc all draw as many fouls as possible in the opponents attacking end for set pieces. I suspect Lalas would too if he really sat down and thought about it.

I'd rather see an AMA midfield, with Aaronson there instead Musah. I think Weah has done well on the right wing.

Regarding the False 9 talk, I know I'm wrong here but I think I want Pulisic there if the 9 position remains unsettled by Sept. I don't follow Chelsea much, but it seems that he's gotten lots of social media love when he played false 9 for them a few times. I don't think he's that great on the left. He's not great at crosses (similar to set pieces), and I think he's been most dangerous for us when he cuts in to the middle. On the other hand, I'll admit that then we'd have to figure out what to do in the left and either play a stud out of position there (Reyna or Aaronson perhaps) or we're riding the Jordan Morris train.

Acosta has struggled mightly anytime he is playing anything other than the 6 for the national team

I'd like to see him bang with the Iranians.

And he's the best at service on set pieces.

And those are terrible. Like stupid bad. Those are not USA colors. It is not that hard. Look at the mf'ing flag outside your office and use those colors.

That's a very basic thing that frustrates me even when the jersey design is not bad The colors are just completely wrong.
They've definitely made good jerseys in the past for us and definitely made good jerseys for other countries so we know they're capable of doing it

Someone on Twitter did run the product ID on Nike's site and it came up "L/S jersey" so who knows. Hopefully Nike will see all the backlash and quickly go back to the drawing board if these really are the legit game kits.
