This is an interesting article, and I think they are onto something with this thought process.

Also, you can get subscriptions to the athletic for $1 on sale pretty easily, if you are worried about paying for it.
Without linking the whole article, they essentially address the current way of thinking of someone being a '10' or an '8', but its not really a great description of what that player might do.
An example, without getting into all their descriptions and analytics is like this
For Advanced Midfielders they would have roles of box crasher, creator, and orchestrator.
So its more describing where you would likely see this player on the field, what they tend to do during the game
I wouldnt be married to any of the naems they have created, but I like the idea of being able to describe how a player plays beyond saying "they're a 9" when there are a lot of ways a striker can be deployed
Positions are a lie. You know this.

Interesting that he includes Pefok.
I haven't really liked what I've seen from Pefok… but I could see Siebatcheu making the cut.

If Pefok ain't making it then neither is Siebatcheu.

Very good read and it's interesting to hear them talk about their data processing and reduction to create the categories of players. Here's a graphic in the tweet that includes all their types for those without Athletic membership.Positions are a lie. You know this.

Thoughts? No major complaints here. If healthy, I'd like to see Gio as a false 9.

I'd rather see an AMA midfield, with Aaronson there instead Musah. I think Weah has done well on the right wing.JJxvi said:
I just have big doubts about that midfield. McKennie and Adams are wonderful. But I feel like Musah is kinda just a decent guy. He's not gonna be able to be like a shadow striker or a box crasher that allows a deep lying forward to create goals and he's not defensive enough to free up Dest to be a player who's job is to provide attacking width, and I think you have to do one of those two things in there somewhere if we are going to score goals
Acosta has struggled mightly anytime he is playing anything other than the 6 for the national teamJJxvi said:
I think pretty much everybody has the inclination to play beautiful attacking-passing-possession soccer. But if I was in charge I'd put Acosta in there instead of Musah, Reyna instead of Ferriera and the entire offense would be to have Pulisic, Reyna, Dest etc all draw as many fouls as possible in the opponents attacking end for set pieces. I suspect Lalas would too if he really sat down and thought about it.
