Matching the nfl? I'd think they'd be pretty happy for that, seeing as how it's at 1pm on a weekday.

Agree, that was the biggest match that Fox had in this World Cup pending a run by the US and they can't outdraw an NFL game? Ouch

How much is the timing of this world cup affect the favorites?

Did having it in the middle of the big league seasons matter? Died the lack or rest matter?

Does the lack of cohesion amongst the best teams matter?

It appears so.

The Cowboys Giants day game drew over 40M. Seems pretty bad for a holiday spot, all things considered.

We're considering the day after Thanksgiving a workday for most now?

Highest rated ever. Not sure how that is bad. Were they hoping for more?

The ratings are fine.

The match was competing with college football. This is still the US of A

That's pretty much a premier match up of 2 playoff team and 2 of the most popular teams in the most popular sport in the USA. 40 million seems a little light

It's a holiday for most companies. I had to take a vacation day.

Working for a company that gives me off Thursday and Friday makes me a tax payer leach?

I'm a teacher. I had the whole week off.

Which makes me smart enough to know that I'm a taxpayer leech.

Market is open on Friday after Thanksgiving, but a half day. We're always playing both sides on wall street

I was at a manufacturer previously and we didn't have off Friday. Most office employees just used a vacation day, though. Also, that company sucked and work life balance sucked

24 teams have played 2 games now and only 1 team is 2-0.

That's probably not entirely unprecedented but it says a lot about how tight this thing is.

I'm really starting to buy into the idea that this being held in November/December is really having an impact on the teams that heavily rely on European based players.

1. European players didn't have their standard rest period
2. Teams had a far shorter amount of time to practice/play together before the start of the world cup

I think each game a favorite can progress, you'll see them start to play better and you'll see the favorites start to impose their wills.

Amazingly only 2 teams are 0 and 2 and Mexico lost dos a cero

I don't know if I buy the rest argument.

Those teams aren't even at mid season yet, they should be fully fit without the toll of having played 30something matches plus cup ties, friendlies, etc.

Yeah I'm not sure either. I do think it worked the other way to some extent… I think some players were playing at maybe 90% for their clubs because they didn't want to get injured for the WC… whereas in a normal year, about a month out from the end of the season, most key places in leagues are decided and most teams are eliminated from CL/EL so guys can kinda slack a bit and it's appropriate/expected.

I don't buy the rest argument either but I definitely think we've seen the result of the short preparation period. We'll start to see more organized and fluid soccer by the day. The favorites will look better and better and the Costa Ricas and Qatars will show some progress too

How'd England deal with the queen's death? Didn't they take a week or two off?

Seems like teams are cramming in games, especially those in cup challenges

But they have played more in total.

The big 6 in England have all played a total of 22 games by Nov. 12. They all averaged 2 games a week.

Last season by Nov. 12, they'd all played 17 games. European midweek matches are usually every other week.

Having the full week to recover can play a massive difference in recovery for athletes. The only week they've all had off since August was the week between clubs pausing and the WC starting.

There are definitely some not so fresh legs out there.

Uruguay's Whites are by far my favorite uniform of the tournament. Love that jersey.

On the subject of fresh legs - this winter cup could actually help a little. Any team that doesn't go far will have players who don't play a competitive match for several weeks during what is usually a busy time of year. I assume they'll return to training with their clubs, but it could be handled as a bit of a break.
