But here's a much more meaningful comparison, and probably good guideposts for how this movie might do.

I'm really surprised by the lack of international box office. Has there been any discussion/theory for that?
Star Wars has always had muted enthusiasm overseas. The kicker these days is the importance of China, where SW is pretty much a non-starter compared to other franchises.

The Chinese market did not grow up on Star Wars, so they do not have the ties into the franchise like elsewhere

R2D2 was in the movie or at least a droid that looked identical.

I think it was when Han and Kira were trying to escape Corelia in the spaceport. R2D2 was in the big crowd on the left side.
That's where my wife spotted him as well. I missed it

I enjoyed this way more than the previews had me setup. I personally put it much higher than TFA and TLJ, and slightly better than Rogue One.

I am curious how

They handle Darth Maul and the Crimson Dawn. Do we get a Solo story part 2? I definitely loved that twist.

I wish they had shown
Chewie finding his bowcaster. Maybe in the sequel? At least we saw how Han got his DL 44

Was it R2D2 or just an R2 unit?

There was an R2 unit for sure, but I dont think it was R2D2. I thought it was reddish in color. I could be wrong though.

I've seen it twice and the second time I was looking for it specifically because I noticed it the first time...

and I still could not tell if it was R2D2 or just a different R2 unit.

Why? I honestly want to understand why people want to use new movies to provide explanations for every random detail, especially when we could be expanding the world instead.

According to reddit, the audience score immediately after opening it up to reviews was at 50%. (When the trolls were likely doing their "review bombing".)

Since then, it's risen to 60%.

I didn't do the math, but considering there's been enough positive reviews to counteract that and actually getting it to rise 10% sounds pretty good.

Because it would have taken 5 seconds and would have been a nice head nod. They took the time to show how Handsome got his and they even showed the mask that Lando wore in Jabbas palace in ROTJ. Both fairly inconsequential but nice little Easter eggs nonetheless.

I feel like RT should not allow audience reviews till actually opening, or at least the night before to account for previews.

They should require a scan of a ticket stub to post an audience review while a film is still in theaters.

Too many trolls out there.

Yes I appreciate the irony of me saying that.

I'll say this, and maybe you guys covered this already. Whoever was in charge of the trailers and marketing should be fire. I really liked that movie, but the trailers did not do a good job showcasing what kind of movie it would be.

Long term by the way, I think that the box office failure of this movie will be the best thing that could happen to this series (though I actually liked this one). They might finally start not taking fans for granted, thinking that anything they pop out means a billion in the bank no matter what it is, or how often they make them. They wrecked what Star Trek was, and aren't far from doing the same here.

I have said this since 7, outside of rogue one they have decided to run a marketing checklist on every film, take no chances in the plot, make it completely formulaic and rely on the franchise's name to do the rest. It isn't a sustainable strategy, so maybe this will finally wake them up to that.

It's making less money because of its release time. People only have so much to spend at the movies and the past month was full of things I'd see before Solo.

It's bombing because TLJ was a full on and completely unnecessary character assassination of one of cinema's greatest heroes for the sake of "diversity"... followed by six months of Kathleen Kennedy, Rian Johnson, and J.J. Abrams calling the franchise's biggest lifelong fans sexists and bigots, and going on about how they didn't need or want us as fans.

Disney has effectively taken $4B and lit it on fire.
Some of ya'll are absolutely insane. Ya'll want to turn every Star Wars thraed into a politics thread. Have fun I'm out.
This whole forum has been invaded by politics boards members, and it has really ruined it for the most part. What is so hard about leaving that crap out of discussing movies/tv shows.

True, the first 10 minutes or so had me worried, but then everything started to fall into place nicely. This is a solid heist movie in the SW universe. As a big fan of the clone wars and rebels series, I'm excited to see what they might do as a follow-up to this one after the big reveal towards the end

Of course I saw it, they took zero chances with it, just like 7 and 8. Rogue One took chances - was a completely different look and feel for a SW movie, duplicitous leads, dark ending (outside of the last 90 seconds),spy feel etc. and it overperformed.
Again I enjoyed this movie, have recommended it to people - but it isn't going to appeal to people outside of the harder core Star Wars fanbase. Get past the good canon stuff and it's a pretty formulaic popcorn flick for a character whose fate is known before you walk in. And especially only 5 months after the last one (which also alienated long time fans), it comes across as a pretty big money grab by Disney. The numbers domestically and internationally say lots of people agree with me.

If that crap is in the movie, then it seems to me that crap is valid for discussion.

On Solo specifically, I think the pansexual nonsense is not worth discussing because I saw nothing as I believe was hinted by all that discussion from the younger Kasdan writer in this movie.

Seriously, compare 8 to 5 as seconds in a trilogy for depth, tone and storytelling. There isn't even remotely a comparison. 8 was not much more than a 2 hour chase scene, even if it was well put together.

Saw this last night and read through the thread this morning. I really enjoyed this movie and would love to see a solo 2. I actually liked the last name sequence. I didn't care for Lando's bot but at least she died quickly.

Loved the new characters, great space action, loved kessel run, just a good fun movie all around and very interested to see Qira and Maul storyline.

Do we known if she did use the force against the spice merchant or just her amazing blade skills?

I saw it at Star Cinema with the laser 4k and there was no haziness or blurriness other people described.

So having depth, tone, and storytelling is "taking chances?" Guess for today's Hollywood that is true.

I would claim 8 took chances that backfired miserably.

Is taking a chance to you basically not making a Star Wars movie? The chances TLJ toook are exactly why a lot of people hated it.

Oh, and Solo does have some dark element in the end. Han freaking shot a dude in cold blood to kill him.

Saw it a couple of days ago. I enjoyed it. I really loved the forging of Han and Chewys relationship. Thought they did a really good job of showing why Chewy has always been so loyal to Han.

I just thought it was an overall ruin movie. Loved lando and Han looked over the broken down MF on Savareen.
