Think that was the whole point of the gun being dug up at the end of the episode. That is the only "real" gun that can kill humans.

"The maze isn't for you"

Real threat, or just part of the game?

Also, I didn't get that the gun at the end was real, but maybe I need to watch it again.

The gun at the end looks real, and someone is speaking to Delores, waking her up and telling her where to find the gun.

Could it be from an old narrative? Those guns woundnt be real though. Another sign that there is a hack going on?

Why would there be a real gun in the world?

I might have been seeing something different, but did it seem like TMIB shot one of those dudes through the rock he was hiding behind?
What's the point of getting in a gun fight if you know they can't hurt you?

Could it be that someone is hacking the droids? i.e. Dolores

Why do you swat at flies?

More or less, I think TMIB got into a gunfight to show that he was in control and the hosts were at his mercy.

He shot him through the wall with the slug round loaded in his custom 9-shooter. Pretty neat, if you ask me. Some gamers never get bored with shooting everything in God mode. That's essentially what's going on here. TMIB gets off on God mode.

For those of you asking about the guns, here is an excerpt of an interview the show's creator did:

Quote:

"It's not the guns," Nolan said. "It's the bullets. We thought a lot about this. In the original film, the guns won't operate guest on guest, but we felt like the guests would want to have a more visceral experience here. So when they're shot it has sort of the impact. They're called simunitions. The U.S. military trains with rounds like the ones we're talking about. But there's a bit of an impact, a bit of a sting. So it's not entirely consequence-free for the guests."

It being the bullets makes things even more complicated for our pending host uprising.

It also still isn't readily clear how the guests can tell who each other are. It might not matter for the guns, but if a random bar brawl broke out (who hasn't dreamed of being in a old timey western throw down) and someone cracks someone over the head with a bottle, how can they tell who's who?

Another good episode though, I can't wait to watch it again this week.

I know that Sepiwall wasn't too high on this show and he's my usual go-to for a post-show read. Any others out there?

Really enjoyed this episode. Loved seeing the "pre-game" and the transition in to the train was pretty awesome. This show is really, really well acted.

Lots of black and white tonight. The hats, Bernard and Cullen both in black and then Bernard in white and Cullen in black in bed.

Love the scene between Ford and the boy and how he controlled the snake. Anyone else think his elevator will come into play down the line?

How long do we think Ford will last? I just don't think they can afford to keep Anthony Hopkins around for too long.

Was that Ford as a kid? Did he create an AI to look, talk and act like him as a child. So he could go on adventures with his younger self? That's how I interpreted that character, and thought, that would be an interesting concept and relationship with an AI. You could get a real look at your past, which most of those details are cloudy and forgotten.

My guess is that since everything in Westworld is made by the creators then they can have some control over it. We saw them making a gun this week and we saw Ford control the snake.

I assumed his death would be a big plot device for the show. A struggle for power that could manifest itself from the corporate side all the way down to the robots themselves in the park.

I also liked the hats. I assume the color of the hat is an indicator to the hosts of how they should act toward them, which is a nice touch. If you choose to be a bad guy then the hosts steer your narrative toward that.

On the subject of guns:

-We know that the Host guns can't hurt humans, based on Teddy trying to shoot TMIB
-Can we assume that the guns humans are given can't harm other humans? I don't think we saw conclusive evidence of this, only the conversation between Host/new guy in Episode 2
The subject of guns is a bit confusing in this show, and I'm sure will be explained in greater detail later on. Host guns can harm other hosts, but can't harm humans. Human guns can harm Hosts, but has not been made clear whether they can harm humans. Dolores digs up a gun at the end of episode 2 that we are made to conclude she can harm humans with.

So either the guns given to both host and humans are only able to harm hosts, and the gun given to Dolores is a real life gun. Or humans are given guns that can harm both host and human. My guess is the former, as it would be too dangerous to give humans deadly weapons with other humans around, and it requires the least amount of explanation.

I thought her finding the gun was because she's testing her memory. The gun didn't look like it was buried long

Are we operating under the assumption that the hosts are basically autonomous once they're in the park unless an operator is close by?

Like, let's say a host goes rogue and starts ripping human's heads off with its bare hands, they wouldn't be able to stop it until they actually got into the park close to the host? All they can do from mission control is watch? That seems to be the case thus far, and I suppose it has to be for the plot to make sense, but from a design standpoint that seems... risky.

My guess is that the writers intend to use the "created vs creator" sci-fi trope and have Dolores kill Ford.

I don't think that is the case. Remember the scene where Maeve is having her breakdown and Hemsworth says something like "Let Clementine do it, she's done it before", at which point somebody else in the control room plays with a tablet and then Clementine acts like she has received a command? To me, this shows that the hosts can be controlled by the Westworld staff.

But on the other hand, the two people working on Maeve had to get right next to her and inject her with something to stop her when she was running through the building.

Thats a good call. I didnt think about its effect on the game. It was just obvious that there are two types of people who play the game. Of all the characters in the corporate office were wearing black and white except Lee Sizemore who was wearing blue. I did enjoy Ford shutting him down.

Lots of mentions for the corporate office who it appears are losing money.

Maybe they can change their roles remotely, but they can't change the inner workings of the hosts? That would be weird though...

Anyway, the monitoring system of the hosts is going to be a major factor down the road I imagine.

William is told he can't get hurt in Westworld. But what about being hurt by another guests? What's to keep a guest from stabbing him thinking he's a robot? Is there a safe word?

Joy: We talked a lot about the rules of the park. A lot of it isn't made explicit in the series but there's something called the Good Samaritan Reflex within the hosts. So say you're in a bar fight and some guy has a knife and maybe there's even another guest that you didn't know and he thinks you're a host and he's gonna stab you in the back. In that instance, a good Samaritan host would seamlessly intersect and get in that fight and literally take that knife for you. Now accidents can happen falling off a cliff and things like that. But you know it's mitigated somewhat because even the animals aside from the flies are hosts, so no horse is going to buck you to your death.

So it's possible to hurt or kill another guest, but the hosts are going to intervene fairly quickly so you can't go on a guest stabbing spree unless there are no hosts around. That first part seems important though.

Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but if this is true then Westworld is likely on another planet, a space station or deep underground. No way to keep such a large "park" that pristine. The "World" part of Westworld may indeed be literal.

Seems that Hopkins character had just gone against the big "new story" that had been proposed and there have already been hints that he is interested in seeing how his creations "evolve"... I don't think in the first two episodes we've seen anything resembling a church or members of a church -- I'm thinking his next step is to "give them religion" and see what they make of believing in a "God".

That could be an option. Or the planet has a breathable atmosphere already. Lots of scenarios, but eliminating all wildlife in hundreds of square miles isn't feasible on earth. Where do you think Westworld is located?

Put Westworld in the center of Jurassic Park, and the carnivores would keep other wildlife out pretty effectively, I bet. So get ready for season 3 - Cowboys vs Dinosaurs!

Unless you don't have to eliminate any wildlife. The park could easily be on an artificial island.
bobinator

There's only two ways it could be on earth, both of which have their problems.

1) It's a closed-off outdoor park, but there would be no way to control the wildlife to that degree. Specifically, birds would be a huge problem. (Though in thinking through this, it being a large man-made island in the middle of the ocean makes a lot of sense.)

2) It's a giant dome (Truman-show esque) but that thing would have to be absolutely massive because we've already seen there are fixed points in the sky (like clouds or the sun) so everyone on the ground has to be seeing the same thing in the sky.
