Shut off water to backflow preventer and drain it. I also wrap/cover mine. Google it - it's very easy. It probably wouldn't hurt to pour a gallon of bleach on it just in case.

Go turn off the water at the back flow preventer today, then turn the screw near it (little nipple things on the left of the image below) so the water in the lines drains/shoots out. I take an old towel and wrap it around it and then tape it on, and then cover the whole thing with a large garbage bag to keep it dry. Has worked well for 12 years and 2 houses.

Gonna be cold AF...hopefully the wind helps keep the place from smelling like cow sh** though. Wind was blowing in an unfavorable direction last time I was up there. Other than that occasional smell, and heavy cold fronts like this, I actual like Amarillo and it's a solid year round climate imo.

That damned feed lot they build west of the city not too long ago was a terrible idea. Before that, the turd smell was only occasional when the winds blew from the SW (Hereford).

The wind blows out of the west a lot up there, especially in the Spring. Just awful.

But, in terms of climate, yeah, it is pretty awesome. You get 4 seasons and dry air. I really do miss that versus the oppressive heat and humidity of Houston, but I don't have much of a desire to move back there. Too many bad memories.
