Yes, but some people get off on being technically correct. These are the same people that have an aneurysm if someone says ATM machine. They're also very likely to have extremely strong opinions about beans in chili.

Was considering this as well, don't want to risk another busted pipe situation - although unless we lose power again the pipes shouldn't freeze?

Might just do it anyway that hella sucked last time.

Guess it depends on your situation. If you have pex you can be a lot less worried. I was wondering why more people would just do this, my guess is so few know just how simple turning the water off is.

What is best idea advice for people who will be away from their home for a couple of days?

Drip pipes? Turn water off at the main? Keep heating unit running in the house and open cabinet doors with pipes dripping?

My pipes did not freeze in the Feb 2021, but I also kept power for all but about 6 hours during that Monday...so the heater running and draining pipes worked from a pipe bursting. This I believe is why I did not have an issue.

What bothers me is not being in my home this time to keep a check on what could be going on.

Might as well. Just go around and open the spigots up.

Pipes burst because water expands when it freezes. So water trapped behind a closed valve with nowhere to go will burst the pipe.

Yes, I use a bib cover that has foam inside of a plastic covering that provides more protection against rain.

I also have my water inlet piped wrapped with material for wrapping exterior pipes.

I usually also stack bags of mulch against that exterior inlet supply line/pipe.
