It's a good sign that we somehow have 11 diametrically opposed opinions on this very specific question, right? We are definitely experts who know what they are talking about.

Meh.

Star Wars is like dirty movies.

Everybody likes dirty movies to some degree.
Everybody has an opinion on what they like.
Not everybody likes the same thing.

Ditto. Felt like Glover was Lando and Ehrenreich was doing his best to impersonate Han. There were too many times in the movie where I just could not believe Han would speak or behave like I was seeing on screen.

Him shooting first though at the end made up for a lot of that bull**** though. I damn near wanted to stand and applause at that.
i get that and actually don't disagree. Han, as we knew him before Solo, wouldn't have necessarily spoken or behaved like he did in Solo.

but that's actually why it worked for me. we actually get to see a little of how Han developed into the character we meet in ANH.

i liken it to Daniel Craig in Casino Royale.

David Arquette's potryal of Gus McRae in Dead Man's Walk would be another good example. Arquette came off kinda whiney and petulant, nothing at all like Duvall's McRae. If you read the book, that's exactly how McMurtry wrote Gus at that age.

Then Zahn's take on Gus in Comanche Moon is basically a Duvall impersonation as Gus has matured and is much closer to the person he is in Lonesome Dove.

I was a little disappointed Alden didn't do the signature Harrison Ford point.

Honestly, I almost felt the opposite. I love Glover and he did a great job, but ultimately it was clearly Glover doing an impression... and there were a couple times where that was painfully obvious. Ehrenreich, on the other hand, felt more like Chris Pine as Kirk. The spirit of the original was there in his performance, but he wasn't trying to do an impression, and thus came across as more natural and something that felt more his own.

I actually didn't have a problem with how he portrayed Lando and really enjoyed it, mostly because I felt like he expanded on the character a lot.

We've all projected a lot onto the original Billy Dee characterization, but if you look at actual screen time in the original trilogy we really never saw that much Lando. His speaking parts were fairly minimal, we know who he was but never really got this deep characterization of him.

I felt like Glover took that perceived mystique and ran with it, really developed the character that we saw in Solo based on what we've all always thought about Lando but never really seen.

In comparison Han felt a bit too smarmy to me, a little over the top like he was trying too hard. But you could also say that's an accurate characterization of a younger guy like that who hasn't quite figured out how to balance his natural charisma with his overconfident nature yet.

I think the best way to enjoy Ehrenreich's performance is by mentally blocking out Harrison Ford's portrayal.

Clearly that's not an easy thing to do, especially if you've seen Empire Strikes Back a few times. It's maybe not a fair analogy, but if you make love to a beautiful woman and then you make love to your high school lunch lady, yes, there may be some disappointment.

But when you make sweet love to the lunch lady you must BE with the lunch lady. Forget the beautiful woman. She's gone. Light saber killed her. It is now lunch lady time. Enjoy the lunch lady. Let the lunch lady surprise you by opening up like a flower. She's so lonely, so eager. She wants your love, but also she needs it.

Glover was really good. Never liked Lando, but it might have been B.D. Williams I didn't like. Glover was cool. A Lando movie is financially a bad idea but I would watch it.

Why is that? The first MCU movie with a black lead did quite well. The first Star Wars movie with a black lead may surprise.

I think Rogue One was so good in part because it wasn't a familiar Star Wars story. It was fresh characters with the backdrop of Star Wars. Solo suffers from the opposite -- he's a largely beloved character that we already either know too much about (if you follow the expanded universe, which I don't) or have unrealistic expectations for. There are too many ways to screw it up.

I think the hard part of capturing Star Wars is that you have to get the tone right. They aren't kids movies, and they aren't really special effects spectaculars. They have to take themselves seriously on some level without being stuffy.

Bingo. I really enjoyed Rogue One because it was a new/fresh story, with new characters, in a familar setting.

But, at the same time, I'm really excited about Kenobi, whereas I really wasn't for Solo. And I can't really explain why. (But I think the fact that it'd be Ewan McGregor has a lot to do with it.)

Ah, but I never said any of that.

I am as prone to making poor snap judgements based on stereo types as the next man. I am after all only a man. Mr. Glover is also a man.

The fact that Mr. Glover is also a black man, while not escaping my notice, did not capture my attention.

I reason that if a beloved character like Han Solo fell short at the box office, then how would a semi-beloved character do?

The fact that Mr. Glover is black or a man or even a black man was not a factor. If he was French this might have been a factor. The French can be a--holes. But he is not French. He is American. Americans can be a--holes, too. But not as much as the French.

I would say Han Solo is a much more beloved character than say Ant-Man, but they're not too far off from each other box office wise.

If it's done well, it should do well at the box office. The fact that Lando is black makes it appeal to a larger audience. What 10-year-old boy doesn't want to see a black space cowboy?

This. It takes place in Wakanda. A 100% black nation, in Africa, fantastically wealthy, with the greatest technology on earth.

I mean, I suppose if maybe Lando's home world is like Wakanda in space, ok, sure.

Agreed. Glover is great, and I would gladly watch him as Lando again, but he was definitely just doing an impression. The accent when they first get to the Falcon was so out of nowhere. It didn't ruin my enjoyment of the movie, but definitely had me going "hmm....that's....interesting..."

Ehrenreich was much better
It was weird because Glover kept going in and out of his "Billy Dee accent"

Loved Ehrenreich as Han - glad it was NOT an impersonation or trying to talk like him, I appreciated it was much more of just his demeanor, etc. which is honestly harder to do acting wise. And he should not have been exactly the same as we knew him 10+ years later - he was still young and coming into the Han we know. Played it perfectly.

Glover as Lando was an outright impersonation and while done pretty well most of the time I was less impressed with his performance.

Finally got around to second viewing, this time with the kids. My 7 and 9 year old loved it. 5 year old got tired but it's long for a kid that small.

It held up very well on second viewing. Just a fun and enjoyable film. I hope it turns a profit in the end and get a sequel.

After learning a bit about Mail on this thread I noticed on second viewing you can easily make out his robot legs a few shots of him.

Like I said I hope it gets a sequel. One of the biggest complaints about the prequels was how Maul was wasted. Solo 2 featuring Maul, the huts, Tatooine and this cast? I'm in!

I noticed it as well, but I think it may have been determined by where he was/who was around. When playing cards, the Billy Dee was in full effect. When he was on the Falcon and having to work around "partners" then he slipped out of it. And when he was recording his memoirs.....oh yeah, Billy Dee time.

Finally saw the movie yesterday and I agree with this.

Glover was great......but it felt like an impression of Billy Dee Williams as Lando.

Ehrenreich actually felt like he was portraying a character who grew through the movie. In the beginning of the movie, he wasn't the Han we all know. But he gave you glimpses of it and by the end you could see how he got to be the character we remember. I'd love to see a sequel where we can finally see him and Chewie pulling jobs themselves and not as part of a crew of crooks.

Circumstances kept me from seeing this movie for so long, I'd lost enthusiasm for ever seeing it. After finally making the time, I enjoyed the hell out of it. A big part of that goes to Alden's performance.

As much as I enjoyed seeing a SW movie with the Empire only vaguely in the movie, I'd like to see another Solo movie where he has to outwit the Empire to smuggle his cargo.
