Has any Japanese player lived up to the hype?

Yeah there have been pretty solid players but $20MM just to negotiate?

Yes. Ichiro is one

Just seems like most these Japanese players come with incredible hype and are expensive as shlt but none of them ever really amount to how much teams spend just to get them here.

Yu, Nomo, Matsui, Sasaki all come to mind too.

What do you all think the Astros will do about a closer? Giles is young and had a good regular season, but will they be able to trust him to not have another post season melt down?

I wouldn't mind seeing the Astros go away from the traditional closer's role. I think it's a matter of time before teams start doing this, and I won't be surprised if the Astros lead the way.

Having a guy who is only supposed to pitch in the 9th inning, when his team has a lead, and pitch for only one inning puts too much pressure on the position it seems. After it was obvious that Giles couldn't pitch again after game 4 of the WS they did OK by using a bullpen by committee. Of course they didn't need five starters to Peacock and Morton could be counted on in the pen. It would be great if at least one of those guys could stay in the bullpen next year.

I'll bet the Dodgers are rethinking the way they used Jansen in the series.

What do you think?

I think if the balls were a real issue in the playoffs, you keep it how it was

Giles was an easy Top 10 closer in the regular season, it's not a real weakness

I don't really care for Wade Davis, I'd be interested in giving some minor leaguers a looksee in the bullpen to see if they can develop to a closer

The rotation will be very interesting to see how it shakes out. Kuechel, verlander, LMJ, Morton and McHugh is really salty. You've also got Martes, Musgrove and Peacock who can all start as well. We know musgrove and peacock can be in the pen. Maybe Martes improves there. If he can pitch like this last year Peacock can close.

I'm against Davis. Too much money for not enough upgrade. Get at least one lefty who's not just a specialist. The rookie Baiskauskis (no idea how to spell it) might not be too far off along with Whitley.

If for some reason he isn't starting Morton has closer type stuff too.

I think one of these guys has to go to the bullpen and the guys with the best "bullpen stuff" would be LMJ or Peacock. I guess Morton could succeed there as well but I'm excited to see him in the rotation all year next year.

I have to wonder with all the injury issues if LMJ wouldn't be the best option for a late inning guy. Less pitches and limiting the back to back appearances. If that curveball is working the game is over.

I agree. There is nothing analytical about a 7th inning get you out of a jam guy, then a 8th inning set up guy and a 9th closer.

I'd hope if it was a bigger deal we would've heard about it before now and not from tmz?

Not if the effin' Dodgers are still in the mix.

Sounds like he's more comfortable on west coast. Not that strange.

dodgers don't appear to be in the mix. And Rangers aren't on the west coast.

Heyman reporting Team Ohtani telling people they prefer a smaller market

This Ohtani situation seems very odd.

He's leaving a crap ton of money on the table coming over this year and now he wants a small market? Just seems odd.

Count me as one that's hesitant to pay $20MM to sign the guy to a minor league deal.

So we can infer by that comment that the Rangers are a small market team and the Astros are not.

If he wants to hit he ain't going to a National league club.

You mean the league in which there is no DH and the pitchers have to hit?

Does he play a position in the field?
Agnzona

He wants to hit everyday and not once a week. And no team will risk the injury of playing him in the outfield.

I don't really see Ohtani being a plus MLB hitter. Pitching in the NL at least guarantees he bats when he starts. Pitching in the AL doesn't guarantee anything. I don't think he'll produce enough to be a full-time DH. Perhaps he could be used in a platoon situation. But if he struggles, the likelihood is high that he's nothing but a pitcher in the AL.

I think he doesn't quite understand what it takes to be a successful MLB hitter (or pitcher). Or the people in his camp don't.

There's only so many hours in a day. Don't half ass two things... whole ass one thing. If he tries to be both full time he won't fulfill his potential in either.
Agnzona
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Up until pro ball pitchers are the best athletes and many times the best hitters too. They only learn not to hit due to never practicing and it not being seen as important.

Yah , but he can't spend 5 hours a day throwing a baseball, he has time to commit to both in my opinion

If hes a Madison Baumgardner level pitcher/hitter combo he's way more valuable in the NL. If he a good enough hitter to be a DH hes more valuable in the AL. The problem with being hitter 4 games out of 5 is what happens when he pulls something stretching a single to a double? Or he tweaks an elbow as a pitcher and needs to go on the 10 day DL? Now you are out a starter and your DH. You cant replace him with one roster move.

If he really pans out as a pitcher I just see him more valuable as a pitcher who can hit. He could pinch hit as needed.
Ag_07

Honestly I think the recovery time from pitching will be a hindrance to him being a successful pitcher and/or DH.

Yeah you only pitch every 5 days but I don't think he'll be able to get the rest and recovery needed in between starts if he's taking BP, hitting, baserunning, etc. Pitchers put in a lot of work in between starts in order to get ready for the next one.

That's a lot to expect from a guy having never played a full MLB season.
