My boys really took to hunting snakes, toads, frogs and lizards during quarantine, and were very excited to "sneak" up on this rough earth snake last night.

I used to see those everywhere when I was a kid. They used to hide in the dugout spaces for water meters in the front yard of every house near the street.

Haven't seen one in years though (and have looked in water meters). My neighbors probably wonder what in hell I'm doing poking around their water meter on daily walks.

I showed my kids how meter boxes can be mini-herp traps and now they mess with all the neighbors boxes.

The post above is correct on the first pic and the second is a DBWS as well

Edit: Pretty sure the DBWS from the first pic is the same snake with better lighting in the second pic.

Your correct on the double picture. I'm not a huge fan of snakes but normally let the non-venomous ones go. Unfortunately, these were on a friend's grandma's patio and she doesn't discriminate. I'll pass on the IDs. I don't think it will change her feelings, but her great-grandson (basically my nephew) is really interested in snakes and I've got him convinced that there are good snakes. He really liked the hognose I posted a while ago.

Not sure if I posted this yet, but here's a 63-inch diamondback rattlesnake I found on FM337 around Lost Maples. Looked like someone shot it and cut off the rattle and left it on the side of the road. Impressive snake, especially for that area of that hill country.

After being warned of many copperheads on my walks/runs by others I may have finally seen one.





Just kidding. I know it is not a copperhead. Water snake of some kind. I'm pretty sure it isn't a YBWS or DBWS.

In Spring. We have an acre and our neighborhood is bordered by the San Jacinto River on one side and Spring Creek on the other, so lots of woods and lots of snakes. This is the first time I've seen this one though. Pretty cool.

I am pretty sure it's "Red on yellow, in Texas our version of this snake is painful, but not likely deadly."
