Finally found a brown snake that my son could hold, been finding a lot of 3+ foot water and rat snakes. One alive one dead.

This guy below scared the crap out of my pool guy this afternoon. We relocated him to a nature preserve a couple of miles away. It appears to have eaten well. Was very docile throughout the relocation process.

Looks like an earth snake, yes totally harmless, and the best bet would be clearing any leaf litter near doors, garages.

Interesting question. My impression has always been that the coachwhips and racers are smarter than most. I am not sure why I think that.

To me, their behavior (periscoping, feigned death, etc) just makes them seem more curious and cunning rather than instinctive ambush predators like a Timber Rattlesnake.

They say the king cobra is as smart as most birds, but I don't know what other species are on the smart or dumb end. The smartest one I have ever personally seen is Bill Clinton.

I honestly don't know if any snake species are particularly intelligent. However, tegus are notable for being a group of intelligent lizard species which can be trained to do tricks and use a litter box.
