Where in Galveston? I live on the west end, and I like to keep track of these sightings.

Thanks!
Ive never personally seen more rattlesnakes in one place than those west end dunes. 2 yrs ago we saw a dozen in one day, mostly small one button juvis. Glad we didnt take the dog that day.

I know it's not a snake, but I was hoping one of yall could tell me what kinda lizard this is.. and why is he puffing out his neck skin like this? He was chilling on the fence in my backyard today.

He is a green anole who is displaying his fat sexy neck for the ladies.

Green anoles have to be one of the coolest lizards around. Change colors, males have brutal fights, dewlaps, push ups, voracious... and all on the patio. American version of a chameleon.

We used to catch them and hold them up to our ears and they would bite the lobe and hang on like an earring.

Cheap entertainment in my day.

Wasps DGAS about anything. Those are the real A-holes of the animal world, right behind ticks and mosquitoes. All the misdirected anger toward snakes, sharks, and spiders should be aimed directly at wasps.

I almost completely agree, but the kind of wasp in the lizard pic isn't THAT bad, right? I see tons of those around my house and they've never bothered me. Just didn't want them to be the "water snake" in this analogy where yellow jackets are the cottonmouths.

Uh... no. This is a red wasp, whose attitude and sting is significantly worse than a yellowjacket. It's not as bad as a hornet, but it's really, really not pleasant. Had six sting the back of my neck once, I looked like quasimodo.

Red wasps are some mean mofos. I dont know what you see buzzing around but they are every bit as mean if not meaner than the damned yellow jackets.

Not many snake pics lately, so thought I'd stay with the current theme. And I wanted to show off my pineapple that is finally producing after 2yrs.

i also saw a lizard shedding the other day on the fence when i was taking a leak outside (like a man should). I immediately thought of this thread and how if i were 10 years younger id have my phone on me and be ready to shoot a documentary.

I did not. It seemed like a private moment. I mean the poor guy's basically changing his clothes and here I am playing paparazzi.

A friend of mine has a daughter who was bit by a coral snake today. The ER doctors don't believe any venom actually entered the bite. But they have a picture of the snake, sure enough, red and yellow. It looks like the kid is totally fine.

Wow! I can't imagine the emotions I'd be going through if my daughter were bit by a coral snake. Was she just a toddler and was playing with it? What a relief to learn there was no or minimal venom.

Never been a recorded death from a Texas Coral Snake bite. They have a milder venom than their Florida and Arizona counterparts. Generally they only cause mild paraesthesias (tingling) and some mild to moderate shortness of breath.

That said, if anyone is going to succumb to a Coral Snake bite, it would be a child.

Spotted this fella raking leaves out in ETX this afternoon. About four feet from the house and near a stairway we used most of the weekend. Cottonmouth, correct? Roughly ten inches long. He dead.

Saw a big cottonmouth at a local fishing spot the other day but he slithered into some brush around the undercut of the bank before I could get my phone out. Other than that black racer posted on the last page I haven't seen much snake action so far this year.

Sounds like the snake was by their car, and the barefooted kid, probably around 8 years old, happened to accidentally step on it. They're totally released and the kid is fine, but talk about a few scary hours.

How could you ID that Cottonmouth without seeing tail or head? Or am I missing something?

color and pattern

You can also see a bit of its tail right in the center where the snake was hacked in two. That bright yellow tail along with the pattern is a pretty good identifier for a juvenile

If I am not mistaken, his tail is right next to his head. The juvenile CM has a yellow tail. The pattern is usually a dead giveaway. For some people it almost looks like a copperhead but the pattern is different and they're usually a lot darker.

I'm sure someone else can go into much better detail than I can.

Thanks. I thought they were darker as well and couldn't really see the head or the tail amongst all the carnage.

The yellow tipped tail is draped behind the snake's head. Juvenile cottonmouths have a very distinctive pattern. The adults vary from dark black to a faded variation of the juvy pattern. The "mascara" stripes across the eye are one of the best ways to ID cottonmouths and are present in both adults and juveniles. When they are young, they all look like the snake that was pictured.
