Pretty sure it's a juvenile PBWS - which was in my front yard in the shrubs. Was so out of place that I thought it was a bull at first!

Sorry about the watermark on the pic. I only have photobucket free acct.

I believe that is a racer of some variety.

Where are you? Looks like a blue racer, but they are only up north

Hard to really see the coloration with that watermark over it. Could be a black racer or a yellow bellied racer.

In Memphis area. Probably a black racer. White to gray on the underbelly.

Where in Galveston? I live on the west end, and I like to keep track of these sightings.

Thanks!

Yes. The head up, eyes, mouth and, coloration are all great indicators.

Ritualistic combat by the males.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

someone like 12fmane can probably provide some good insight on that. I don't believe it is all that common on places like the beach.

However, at the location it occurred, there are quite a few small freshwater ponds and marshes. The in laws live right down the street and I am pretty familiar with that area. It wouldn't surprise me if the snake escaped from one of those areas and ended up on the beach looking for food or shelter.

Reminder, Galveston has a lot of rattlesnakes!!! The post Ike efforts to prevent beach erosion created the perfect habitat for all of their prey. They were already there but have "flourished" lately. Please don't be stupid and run through the dunes.

You have to post it to a place online that you can link to. The easiest is Imgur.

He was doing his best "look at my triangular head, I'm
Venomous" impression. Virtually all water snakes do it when threatened and why a lot of people on here don't recommend just going by the shape of the head for IDing a pit viper.

Highly inaccurate way to determine whether or not a snake is venomous as stated by ttha. Maybe the worst way considering the snakes that are easiest to confuse with venomous species (water snakes) all flatten their heads into a triangular shape when threatened.

Edit: Additionally, Elaspid snakes (like coral snakes and cobras) have oval shaped heads. While cobras are not native to the Americas, they are often illegally kept as pets and sometimes find their way out into the community.

Neighbor got this by the ponds the other day, one of the many diamondback water snakes we have around us

My daughter got this photo of a banded water snake while walking the dog this morning. Another example of why the diamond head is not a good identifier. I rescued a rather large legless lizard from the road yesterday. Unfortunately I didn't have my phone. They don't last long on a road because they can hardly move on the road's surface. They either get run over or eaten by a hawk, cat, kid, etc. Edit to say not eaten by a kid. I hope.

CSPD got called about and killed an albino monocled cobra at Gateway Villas during my third year of residency. Really glad we didn't have to treat a cobra bite but the fact they killed it was a shame. The snake was unarmed.

On your picture you can clearly see the vertical lines u der the jaw. On my post it appears to me there are also vertical lines under the jaw, if you blow up the picture some. That is what i was using to determine it to be a wayer snake
