Yes, sometimes, but it requires scale counting and is a lot easier if you have the head and ventral areas (near the transition to the tail) to look at. It is also.usually beyond my skill level, but 12f is pretty good at it.

Can you get a close up shot? For quite a few snakes the pattern will come through on a shed, and you can tell if the scales are keeled or smooth.

My son asked me to take him to the park yesterday afternoon to "look for tadpoles and stuff". He had a successful few hours finding spiders, minnows, tadpoles, skinks, frogs, and snakes.
He caught this Brownsnake and I caught the YBWS.
I couldn't get a good shot of the side of the YBWS but it had the vertical black lines on the bottom of the jaw, and my seek app confirmed it as one before I messed with it. The shot in the bucket is a great example of it flaring its head to mimic a cottonmouth.

Awesome shot of the YBWS. I can definitely see the vertical stripes, and the triangle head is definitely a good warning sign
