Just a frog in his throat, he'll be fine.

Couple miles north of 280, kind of in the middle between the major roads. This pic was from a month or so ago

This photo is graphic, please remove if it's too much for the thread/forum. The photo is from Crystal City last fall, and was strange enough that I wanted to share it here. We're trying to keep the pig population as low as possible, so they're basically shoot on sight. I head shot a piglet with my 22-250 during the evening hunt, and went back after dark to dispose of the carcass. A small snake (I think a garter) was in the wound rooting around. My buddy snapped a picture, I shooed the snake off and we left to dump the pig. I didn't know pig brains were on the menu for snakes...

Edit: didn't mean to add smiley face...

I used to recommend Chippewas (which are still great), but the snake boots these days are all pretty decent. I have a pair of the Red Head (Bass Pro brand) that more than hold their own.

I have never seen anything like that- thanks for sharing. I have probably not left much game around for long enough to let this happen, but never would have guessed it.

That is an interesting picture.
Note this is OB. Dead animals are posted regularly, especially dead pigs (unless Giddings is going live, of course).

My nephew got tagged by a copperhead on the hand Thursday afternoon. (Aledo) He was getting some herbs out of their garden. A lot of pain and bruising after about 10 hours in the ER. Main concern is he is a saxophone player working on his master's right now.

My nephew is recovering pretty well. Pain is almost gone and mobility is good.

And, he did not kill the snake. I am not sure I would have been as forgiving

12fmane, how do you get such great pics? Those snakes are clean, in that perfect cooled position, etc. even that water snake patterning is highly visible and bright. Almost every one I see is muddy and faded, dirty.

Great pics man. Always enjoy them, top notch.

Thanks! A lot of them are a pain in the butt to photo, especially water snakes. Patience, good camera equipment, and being able to take a few bites may be the keys.

I've been bit a few times by a rat. Ain't much. Other species not sure. They do not have much force per bite

I can tell you from experience that a rattlesnake bite isn't that bad... in the beginning. After that it more than tickles.

Timber Rattler in Upshur County, Big Sandy, TX. Hated to see him dead, but was close to where my kids play.

They are a federally protected species, so you may want to take the picture down. People have been fined/prosecuted for killing them that I know of from first-hand knowledge here in Tennessee from social media posts.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

I believe they just changed their protected status in Texas. Not positive and don't have a link, but am pretty sure that is the case. I personally wouldn't kill one, just wanted to note I don't think the OP is breaking the law as of now...

Good enough - didn't know if they Texas law had changed, as I don't live there.

Click on the link under (e) and the attachment lists Timber Rattlesnake.

12fmane,

Any idea why they changed the status?

I can't find anything about its protected status being changed. It also doesn't look like he said he killed it unless the edit was to change his statement.

It says all the snakes in subsection e are protected from commercial trade. Indigo snakes which are protected are also on the list.

Over the last few years there have been regional ranking workshops put on by TPWD dedicated to Texas herps. I didn't attend the one where horridus was brought up, but apparently the group concluded their status in the state should be revised. Similar situation with the Texas indigo and several other species. The group goes through a long list of parameters, threats, habitat availability, etc., and based on scores an "S" ranking is generated and discussed. Apparently the group thought horridus is doing ok in the state and doesn't currently deserve a listed status.

It had been a while since a lot of Texas species were evaluated and there have been quite a few new studies, citizen science, etc., that needed to be taken into account.
Badace52

So what does that mean then, because it read to me like you are not allowed to trade or possess any of the species listed in e). So that means you can still kill them but they have to be left there?

Back when Columbia fell apart over east Texas, and they were scouring the woods for remains, I heard the guides they used killed large numbers of timber rattlesnakes. I'm not sure if that was just scuttlebutt, but they did do some "re-stocking" in the area. Some of the lake subdivisions had quite a few large rattlesnake appearances for a few years afterwards. Growing up, we'd see them from time to time in the woods near our home, but never in the subdivision.

I think that is correct but will be legal once the new status is adopted. For example at some point in the near future you can legally catch and keep an indigo, as long as you have a hunting license and herp stamp.
