Although it is as high as a hat, the markings seem off for a rat. Is it a rat snake?
Pretty sure it is a full grown citrus tree of some sort. I would guess orange.

Spent the weekend clearing some trees and cut wood around the yard. Wife saw a western ribbon snake about 12-18" long. I was on the other side of the house, so never got to see it. She was bummed that she wasn't able to catch it so we could take a picture for Texags.

No idea what this one is since I was 15-20 feet above it on a bridge. We have tons of water snakes in our area but the body shape seemed to be too thin
I assume this is a salamander? It was a big sucker (6-8") and easily survived my son running over it with a scooter. Ran off behind a tree

We used to catch indigos on sight and bring them back to our hunting camp, as they eat rattlesnakes. We were in Rufugio County, about 15 miles south of Beeville. The biggest one I personally ever brought back to camp was a seven and a half footer. At that length, my "just dangle it by its tail" strategy didn't work really well!
Found this huge rat snake climbing up one of our bushes to get at a bird's nest 7 feet in the air. At least 5' long, possibly 6. I couldn't get a great picture because I had a dog with me that really wanted to mess with him.

Regarding PUTU's first pic, is the "swims with its whole body on the surface vs. swims with just its head on the surface" a real way to tell cottonmouths from water snakes or is that just an urban legend?
Most of the time they float on top except for when the are hunting. It is pretty obvious when comparing how they swim to get from one place to another.Counterpoint said:

From the size and slight coloration I could see I "think" this was a banded water snake. It was around 3" and I thought I could see some bands on it. Either a thin one or just the water causing an illusion. We do have several other snakes like rat, ribbon, garter, etc. but it was longer. Got a better idea of the length when I tossed a rock by it to see if it was a stick or snake.
It is not highly reliable but in general, cottonmouths swim much higher in the water (more of their body above the surface) than water snakes. This is more true of older, larger snakes which tend to be wider and float more easily.
However, cottonmouths can swim underwater and will often sit submerged in shallow water during warmer months with just their head above the surface.
So I would say that statement is mostly true, but there are much better identification methods.

Relocated this guy from my wife's expedition to a field down the road
Lot of activity this Spring.
That would be a nasty surprise to come walking down a concrete sidewalk and have that young copperhead hiding in the crack and smack you in the ankle.
JD, Where on the island did you take that pic?
Not mine but came from my parents hood, Evia, over by the golf course. Neighborhood backs up to a pretty good sized undeveloped field with the occassional snake or critter popping out.
