Diamondback water snake. He was so lethargic today with the colder weather I almost thought he was dead. Walked to within just a few feet and he never moved until I touched him with my fishing pole. Think I woke him up from his nap. Buda, TX

Gott try my first capture of the year two nights ago before this little cold snap came in. A big heathy copperhead to start the year. Alert, but not grumpy. Not even a strike when I was manipulating it for release or nudging it into the brush.

This is a rat snake. You are correct. It just looks different than the ones we have in Texas and it is dull because it is about to shed it's skin. You can tell by the cloudy discoloration of the eye scale.

Came across a 4 foot rat snake yesterday while mowing. He wasn't pleased at all to be discovered, but it was warm outside so the snake had plenty of energy for a rapid escape after I tried to corral it. All for the best, as I really didn't want a couple of snake bites.

Wife just found this guy hanging around her chicken coup, I think it may be a rat snake, but figure you guys would know for sure. I am in the North-East part of Dallas County

He was up above our heads, right at hat level. I was able to convince him to get in a bucket and relocate him to a better location, meaning away from my wifes chicken coup.

What is that wire for? I bought our coop used and it also has that in the upper corners.
The coop is a small storage shed she bought. It has two sections, one is the coop side were they sleep and roost. The other is storage for feed, brooms and various other items for spoiled chickens. So the mid-wall that separates the side and is covered with chicken wire and she has strung lights in there too. The chicken wire fencing wall does not go all the way up, just about 7 feet tall. He was hanging on the two x four at the wall separating the two areas with chicken wire just overlapping. Nothing really in the corners.Counterpoint said:MD1993 said:

Well saw a decent rat snake but bumbled my phone and he scadadeled. So I took this instead. Regency bridge at sunset.

Smallest water snake I have seen to date, probably around 18-24". Almost got run over by a few people riding bikes so he was moved off of the trail.
Wife snapped a pic of this fella while on a walk with the kids on San Gabriel Trail this AM.

Not the clearest picture. I was driving down a dirt road and noticed a can flailing around on the side of the road. Backed up to find this guy with his head stuck in it. I snapped the pic then picked up the can. He started to spiral his body around and fell out after a few spins. His scales were a little messed up but he looked like he'd be fine. He looked at me with a sideways glance and went back in the grass on the side and quickly disappeared.
Looks like a yellow bellied racer to me.
