Certainly less intimidating than your recent sighting...

Lots of nope ropes. The bucket of 4 I caught just after dark around the front of the house inside of 10 minutes. It was very hot and breezy and humid and they were very active.

How are you able to ever just casually walk outside?

Once it cools down in October, yes. They stop coming out at night and switch to a little daylight activity if it is warm enough, then go into hibernation. I won't see them again until Mid to late April.

I wear a headlamp outside after dark.

Sorry if already asked, any thoughts as to why you have so many? What part of Texas, I assume? Overly wooded? Any correlation to the cicada hatch and such?

Good habitat for them. Post oak prairie with sandy soil, rural, lots of the area wildlife friendly, plenty of prey.

I saw two roadrunners in my driveway Friday, so they have predators about during daylight.

Got another one. Later I went out to shut the chicken coop and found a 4' rat snake trying to wriggle under a gap in the bottom section where I have the younger chickens screened in, and sizing them up to see if they were too big. Surprised him when he gets roughly yanked back out of the pen and tossed aside.

Also found a 24" copperhead lurking about and he got shooed off.

Did get shots of the one I caught earlier getting a cool bath from the leaky spray where the hose attaches to the faucet out front. I had an idea one might be there tonight in this weather.

Where you live scares me with the amount of venom you got sliding around.

If you live in rural post oak prairie, they are there.

Other than dead.....? Found in Galveston. I think it's a ribbon but there's a salt marsh snake we found awhile back that looks similar as well.

What stands out to let you know not coral? Size of snake? Red part smaller?

The black bands on a coral are solid black. Longnose snake will have some degree of speckling in the black bands, and out west they occasionally have very little if any black.

Wife and I have seen 4 snakes around our property in the last day, two coachwhips (maybe same one?), a checkered garter, and a texas rat. One of the coachwhips was in our birdbath and hanging around the bird feeders...

Not a snake but I thought you guys may be interested in my new friends that have moved into my barn. I bet I killed 15 of them yesterday and destroyed at least that many of their nests, with fire of course

They do love a nice cool barn in the summer. We used to find hundreds when we had to clean the molasses tanks in all the pastures every summer.

A fantastic read about mountain lions. Based not too far away in Boulder.
