No he wasn't. We got home, my wife props the door open because I'm carrying the bags. She goes in, and my youngest daughter comes running back to me saying "snake, snake!". I look up at the door just in time to see the snake going into the house. I run in, and my wife has the skewer from our fire pit in hand. The snake is coiled up behind the door, not looking happy. I tell her to wait, and just as I do the snake darts back outside, between the door and the jamb. I went outside after that to find it and take the picture.

As I think I mentioned before, we live close to a river that comes and goes with rain. We've had a ton of frogs this season, so I'm sure this guy is having a feast.

That's a tough one. I'm guessing PBWS, but I am more confident in the WS than the PB.

I can't tell for sure either but I kind of got the chain link pattern of a diamond back. That or cottonmouth but head didnt look right.

I will say I when i zoom in it get very blurry and I did not sleep last night so I could be way off.

Pretty sure it was not a cottonmouth. The brown and white blob is a dead rat. Think the snake got it and was resting before eating, or something. My son helped with the photos and he is 2, so you get what you get. It was kind of a compromise, let him help with pics, or let him go see the snake. I think we chose correctly. This was at the Butler Longhorn Museum.

That 47 rattlers in a jar thread made me wonder about something I've never thought about before - what do snakes eat when they are that small?

Insects, lizards, amphibians, smaller rodents. depends on the species.

Most snakes will eat anything they can overpower and general something 1.5 times their body diameter.

My place is more like California for copperheads, not Idaho. I like to think they move out more than in.

That was a shockingly reasonable article about it. I expected, "Snake of Death found in Park. Quarantine for 2 Weeks!"
