That dude will ruin your day. Which beach were you at? People don't believe me but once you get past the seawall on Galveston they're pretty freaking common- I can't find the pics anymore but once I was launching my kayak a little before dawn down off Eckert Bayou and there were 2 of them just hanging out in the middle of the sand where people would put in.
Note to self, don't be the first guy to put in early in the morning.

I was on Mustang Island once as a teen and had a close encounter. We were walking at the edge of the dunes, and my friend said, "Snake!" I looked back and there was a little curled up rattler between two of my barefoot footprints. Sick feeling!

Out working on some excavations near Caddo Lake and have a few buddies hanging around. First I believe is a ribbon snake of some variety and the second photos (taken by one of our equip operators and not super clear) are a water snake I believe. Operator called it a cotton mouth, but I think I can make out vertical lines on the mouth.
Super grainy, but my first thought is nope rope.
The operator was right. The second snake is a cottonmouth. You were right about the first snake.

West end Galveston dunes are crawling with rattlers. I wouldnt have believed it til i saw it myself. Dont let kids or dogs run around off the boardwalks out there.jetch17 said:

It isn't just the dunes. I did some work at the old sulfur terminal next to the Pelican Island Bridge, and they routinely found rattlesnakes trying to get up around the pipes and tanks, particularly in the winter. They brought the sulfur in via railcar in molten form, and kept it molten when needed by heating it with steam, so there were lots of warm pipes around. The maintenance guy had a dog that ran around with him that would stop and point and growl when there was a snake around. Hi Guys, long time lurker on the Outdoors board. Ran into this guy on our walk tonight. Was 6-9", hard to tell because it was coiled. Noticed the broader head. Not sure if this is a baby or full grown. Any ideas?

Thanks Dave and BadAce. I agree, very pretty snake. I had seen a western ribbon snake and a coral snake in my back yard, and some other garters around the neighborhood, but had never seen this.
Here's a picture of the Coral we found in our back yard a couple of years ago. We live relatively close to some slow moving waterways, which I believe is where he came from.

ID Please. In NW Fort Worth near a pool. Was told it was "big" by my brother who knows nothing about snakes. I thought rat but then saw the vertical lines on jaw and thought diamond back water snake.

If you are impressed with the size of a snake and it's not a rattler, it's probably a bull. Your friend calling it big is a clue.. They have a girth plus length that is unusual. Rats aren't that thick, water snakes aren't that long.
Rats can be thick. In fact thicker. Depends on their food source.

Fair enough. The ones I have seen, they always look sleeker, whereas the bulls have that heavy look to them. I guess I haven't been in locations where the rats have enough grub!
