Well a few weeks before he is hungry again, a month or two before he will be really hurting for a meal.
Edit: It may be his last meal or second to last before hibernation, so it may actually last him until spring. Their metabolism slows to a crawl once it gets cold.

Well snake was gone but rat was still there. Hope no one hurt the snake.

That close to a sidewalk it is more likely someone scared him off his meal. He may come back to it later if it was dead.

We live in the country just south of Omaha Nebraska. We found this little guy in our basement this morning. I think it's probably a Lined Snake. Can anyone confirm or correct me if I'm wrong?
Found some snake skin on the patio today. Do I:
A) Tell my wife so she can "keep one eye open", however more likely causing her to never step foot outside nor allow my children to again.
Or...
B) say nothing.

I'd use a shotgun for snakes.

That's a pretty big copperhead, based on my extensive experience.
One of My dogs got into a tangle with a 4' rat snake over the weekend. We walked up on it slithering across the driveway mid morning and she went in to investigate. It coiled up and before I could pull her back she went in for a closer sniff and got struck on the nose, but she was quick on the counter-snap and when I grabbed the snake with my patented "look over Here at my waving left hand" move, I found a pretty good tooth puncture in its neck. Dog got a scratch that healed up with a bit of bleeding that healed up without a sign and the snake will live too. I consider it a valuable lesson because later when we walked by that spot and she caught the smell of the snake, she was more cautious approaching things to investigate.
